De la Hoya and Roberto Duran at 140. How does this go down?

DeJesus did well with Duran over 10 rounds, but when they moved up to 15 rounds it was Duran. (2 times)

Duran may stop Oscar at 135 but those 5 lbs when Oscar moved to 140 and beyond helped immensely in settling his physical attibutes.

 

I agree. It isn't a big knock on anyone to lose to Oscar at 140. He was quick and strong and counterpunched well. Duran would have a hard time reaching him if Oscar fought his fight with his jab.

Oscar would have to stay on the outside to have a chance of winning. If Duran can get inside he'd break him down with constant body shots. Oscar would have to catch Duran several times while Duran tried getting in on the inside to have a chance of winning.

 

If Hoya had a few more fights and/or had come through a bit earlier I think I would be of the opinion he would be a H2H monster at 140.

He beat his limited opponants to easy at lightweight and only had the 2 fights at light welter..At 147 form was good but he didn't posses the same physical advantages there and stamina issues appeared.

I don't pick to many over him now but I'd probably more inclined to side with him in a lot of those 50-50 fights at the weight.

 

He knocked out DeJesus who was if not great very good twice. He had Leonard in trouble 4 or 5 times in their fight and he was a level or two above any version of Oscar. Duran had good speed too at the lower weights.

Do you think Oscar had the gas tank to survive the kind of heat Duran would bring for 12 or God forbid 15 round? DelaHoya struggled holding off Gonzalez at 140 in the late rounds and he was very slow.

Anyway DelaHoya wouldve had trouble standing out in the era of Duran/Hearns/Leonard and Benitez. He probably wouldve been overmatched.

 

Oscar was a very good fighter. A great star. Too many holes in his game to hang with those guys. He might not have beaten DeJesus. DelaHoya had some good physical gifts. His jab was nice and his lefhook was quick and sharp but thats kind of where it ends.

His stamina was just poor at the elite level. He had no righthand to speak of and his pocket defense was lacking thats why he had to move and wear himself out so often. He couldnt fight inside a lick.

These are not the type of defects you want to bring ito the ring against a near prime Duran.

well the thread is about Roberto and Oscar at 140 was close to Ray at 147 in 1980. It would be tough for Oscar, but Oscar had tremendous speed and jab and counter left. It would have been tough Duran would have had to get it close and like it or not Oscar could punch at 140. I remember how easily he hurt Darryl Tyson at 140. Not saying that is Duran whom he hurt or would hurt, but it would keep Roberto respectful-and Oscar has some punch. Oscar was quick and sharp at 140. I always said at 140 he could have built a great legacy for himself but he wanted the big money at the 147 weight. Who wouldn't.
