Berg was a legend in the ring. Shame he put his all into the fledgling division.

I know what you mean, but like I said mine are probably done more on dominance, as well as who they fought in their defenses. There are a couple of fighters that could have been on my top ten list at the weight, if i did another tomorrow it would probably change. The top 5ish won't change much though.

Don't get me wrong. Lineal titles are probably the best starting point in any division but you have to open your mind and look beyond that otherwise Pascal > Charles.

I'm basically saying it's wrong to dismiss a fighter based on a glance at boxrec and his ommission from a traditional lineage.

Why the **** is Hector Camacho in your top ten?

    Fair.

Pretty fair, especially if taking into consideration the skill level of the fighter. Would I disagree.....nope, he's my first choice too.

BTW, separate issue, what do you think of Benitez's first fight with Bruce Curry?

Like i said haha, after the top 6 it was a struggle to rank some fighters. Like i also said if i did a list tomorrow it would probably vary again after the top 6.

he really had no option he outgrew the lights and was just not really big enough for the welters , plus mandells people did not want to give him a tittle shot especially after he beat canzoneri in 1930 and really even in 29 they wanted to stay clear

Also thought Curry won that fight, probably pretty easily. Kept catching him with the left hook and also showed some decent power that many didn't think he had.

It's a shame in that he was right up there with Ross and Canzoneri but didn't make his name in the prestigious divisions. Probably would remembered much more fondly had the lww division not existed and his fights with Tony being for the lw titles.

Thing is though that it was done on rounds wasn't it. If it was done on the must system it would have been Curry's easy.

    Yes it was rounds.

If I don't know enough about a division, I'd just post my top 5 rather than going through 'list of light welterweight champions' on Wikipedia and looking for names I recognise.

REMEMBER! I made similar errors when I was a noob. I'm trying to help him protect his rep'. He's enthusiastic, making an effort and a seemingly sound poster. You know me, all I want is more knowledgable sound posters to debate with.

Haha, i did it on people I know at the weight and who did well at the weight. I think my rankings are quite fair, granted Hatton and Camacho may not belong there, but everyone else in my eyes do.

yeah I think as early as 28 berg had had real trouble making the lightweight limit and had a lot of fights just over the lightweight limit . funny thing is about berg he probably has the two best lightweight wins of any british fighter canzoneri and ckocolate stella names and he really gave canzoneri a beating in their first fight
