The thing about the first Ali-Spinks fight was that although Leon was better than we all thought he was at this time,Muhammad made him look better than he actually was.

    A young speedy novice,such as a 1961 Cassius Clay,would stand a pretty good chance :D

Ali had a tough fight in manilla. Looked shite against young (though nicking it on my cards) but he'd realistically already been beaten by Norton and Shavers before neon got there.

I think Holy is a good shout. I'd probably pick Tyson also. Any Olympian who went on to be a great champ could probably manage it.

Neon had talent he just sniffed it all up his nose.

Leon could have done something after his title win. Even with talent a fighter needs luck and dedication in equal measure. Larry Holmes and Gerrie Coetzee both took Leon extremely seriously. You could argue Leon brought the best out of champions like Holmes, coetzee and qwai.

Leon was almost as fierce that night as Duran in Montreal. In many ways though, he was the perfect hyena to come in and clean up the carcass after the lions known as Shavers and Norton had feasted. I agree that Ali lost all three of those fights and that they weren't even that close. Leon was an opportunist, in the right place at the right time, but had he defended against a Shavers or Norton, he'd have been crushed. Still, gotta love his guts against Ali.

This might not be a popular opinion, but sometimes i feel like Ali lost to Spinks on purpose.

Because of the way he was bragging about how he was going to beat another Olympian and how he was going to become the only ever 3 time world champ etc etc

Its easier to lose to a Spinks and then win the title back, than lose to a Frazier and have to go through hell to win it back.

    Just a theory.

Tim Witherspoon might be worth a try.

this, norton would have humiliated him in 1978, this pathetic version of ali made spinks look better than he actually was

I've always felt that the decision for the Shavers fight was fair. There seems to be a bit of revisionism regarding that bout in recent years. I remember it very well and while there was widespread feeling that it was time for Ali to quit, and that he was nowhere near the fighter he was when he regained the title from George Foreman three years earlier, there was no controversy about the result.

Well, for what it's worth my old man always said the same thing. I'm not sure I buy into that theory, but it's interesting.
