Why does being a C-rate football or basketball player impress you more than being an A+ rate boxer? Boxing is by far the most athletic endeavor of the three.

Furthermore, who do you think would be the better soccer player? Let's turn a little cultural bias on its head there.

Have you seen both Chavez and Taylor do vertical or horizontal jumps? Are you making some assumptions here? And when has jumping ability ever factored into boxing ability? As far as abilities applicable to boxing which Chavez had over Taylor I would list stamina, strength, timing, durability... if you want to take jumping (and to assume for some reason or another Taylor was the better jumper) over them, go ahead.

He not only neutralized him in the fight (albeit it took to the last seconds for his approach to win over), he neutralized his career.

If you can't see the damage Chavez was doing in the middle rounds, I just don't what to say. Again, the fact that he physically ruined Taylor in the fight speaks the loudest. Taylor was never the same again.

Eh, maybe. The entire dynamic of the fight would've changed if it were a 15 round fight. I don't dispute the probability of Chavez wearing down Taylor in a longer fight. But it would have been a completely different fight.

I also hate when people say Walcott would have beat Marciano in a 12 round fight. It would've been a completely different dynamic if it were a 12 round fight. You just can't say these sorts of things, but I get you.

    All good points except...

Chavez beat Taylor in a 12 round fight... and sadly destroyed his career.

So, some of people here can make accurate estimates of which fighters would be the winners if it were the long jump, sprint or hurdles they were contesting, or how they would excel in basketball, football, gymnastics and speed skating ........ by observing them fighting in the ring ??

Superstars was sometimes a good laugh to see boxers competing in other fields. Most of them were surprisingly terrible.Frazier just hilariously bad.

Conteh was one of the few good ones.

I remember Ali appeared in some charity event in the 70s and was shockingly slow in a 100 yard dash. Came in last.

Yeah, but then Norris posterized him with a reverse dunk.

In the standard physical tests done by Swedish Olympic participants, boxers are on average among the bottom half. Not surprising really, since technique is such a large part of the sport.

In a recent ESPN Magazine article, boxers were voted the most fit of all athletes. Anecdotally I have known many boxers who were outstanding distance runners.

Uh huh, no one is disputing Chavez wouldn't be more likely in 15 rounds. But it would be a different fight. Taylor may pace more, jab more, pot-shot, engage less and not sit down on combinations as much. I mean, he'll get broken down but it may have a completely different dynamic of a fight. That's all.

If only it was filmed. How far along in the 70's was it? I imagine Ali might have had more decent speed in the 60's. Then again it wasn't quickness but balance and grace that made his footwork so great.
