When someone says a boxer is "athletic", what exactly does that mean? What makes a boxer "athletic"?

    Ali
    Sugar ray
    RJJ

all them type of guys. For me any boxer who is fast and can go at a high pace for 12 rounds is athletic.

Athleticism is the degree to which you are athletic, as in, how well you excel at athletics.

Generally, speed, strength, coordination, endurance, and so on are the most noted components.

In boxing, it is often used to talk about purely physical talent as opposed to well-schooled craft and technique, whether fundamental or advanced.

Would power be a component of athleticism?

Yeah. Especially in the case of boxing. These things all go together though, for the most part. How hard a guy hits is determined by the velocity of the punch, the mass involved, and how well executed the punch is in a technical sense.

Athleticism = physical aspects of the sport

    Speed
    Power
    Agility
    Stamina

A fighter described as athletic will usually possess all them high than average, or be particularly prevalent in one or two

Pacquiao is a good example of someone who possesses all 4 in large amounts

Someone like Marquez, isn't, he doesn't ....(didn't?) hit particularly hard, isn't blindingly fast, doesn't throw non-stop and doesn't posess cat-like agility, however he has mastered the art of boxing and has a brilliant brain

The second type of fighter usually has more longevity than the first type, as physical gifts will erode sooner or later and a large part of an athletic fighters arsenal will be gone.

Mayweather is a good example of someone who possessss both great athleticism, and a great brain.
