that's the problem and the fascinating aspect of this fight. dempsey has far more tools to beat ali (63-65 ali particularly) than i would say he has against many other, lesser heavyweights. based on styles, dempsey has a real chance and i feel he'd knock ali down

:thinkpulling the head straight back? often worked for him due to his athletic ability..but his technical advantages came with many technical flaws as well.

you are just ****ing trolling now...most second rate club fighters would not get stopped in 2 minutes by Ali even if his life depended on getting the stoppage.

As for Liston, a million other factors in that.

Although I lean toward Ali in this matchup I don't believe for one minute that it would be an easy fight for him. Dempsey had the weapons and style to push Ali to the brink. Many of Ali's opponents were somewhat one dimensional in the way they fought him. By that I mean they came straight at him standing upright which was the wrong way to fight a man like Ali. Frazier gave Ali fits with his bob and weave as did Norton with his crablike style and I think Dempsey would pose some styilistic problems as well. His two fisted power and hand speed along with his movement would make him a very dangerous opponent for Ali who would need to stay on the move himself and watch out for perhaps the best left hook in the history of the division. Dempsey and Louis are the the 2 HW's from the 1st half of the twentieth century who could compete in any era....In my humble and admittedly inexpert opinion. PS...Good to see Burt chime in on this.

Burt is one of few on these boards who really knows the old timers. What you write is all very true.

I think that the best thing you can say for Ali in terms of the stylistic dynamic, is that Dempsey was not quite as bad a stylistic match up for him as Joe Frazier.

    Realistically, the fight is on.

    I agree

The only man Ali ever stopped in the first round was some darn middleweight who probably wasn't as "heavy" as boxrec says, 178 lbs would still be very light and lighter than most lightheavies today.

Ali stopping Dempsey is reasonable looking at Ali his KO statistics against opponents below 200lbs, but first round is :nut

    I was being generous.

Ali stops Dempsey before the fight is ever signed. Dempsey got his fill of colored opponents with John Lester Johnson. He was mortally afeared of ever entering the ring against another ebony-hued opponent thereafter. Just look at the chicken**** move he pulled when Jeanette tried to enter the ring with him. He and his management performed the single most eggregious duck in the history of the sport against yet another Black fighter in refusing to fight Willsx, orchestrating signings which they had no intention of honoring. Dempsey should be viewed as merely a white champion who perpetuated the segregation of the sport.

Jimmy Robinson...who's record was, it seems 1-2.

Of course Sonny got stopped in 2:12, however, at the least you can say is he was flash knocked down, could have gotten up in under 10, but Ali jumping around and Jersey Joe not being able to ref worth a damn ended up making it a KO than.

You are allowing your personal hatred of a man dead for almost 30 years to effect your judgement. Namely make a bull**** call like he gets stopped in under 2 minutes by a man who only ever stopped 1 fighter in that time or less, a fighter who was 1 and 2 at the time.

As for the "Dempsey only fought white contenders" we could go back and forth on that, its been done before in Classic....whatever the reason I think it is fair to consider it in ranking dempsey. Of course you might also wish to consider that same variable in ranking Jack Johnson.

As I stated, the two minutes was generous.

He would never enter the ring.

I love Dempey. I do not hate him.

Jack Johnson also never fought black fighters as champion...and Ali never once got in the ring (or in a war) with a asian.
