Barkley beat Thomas Hearns in two fights a lot more convincingly than Ray Leonard did. Before those fights I didn't think Iran Barkley should be mentioned in the same sentence with Hearns, let alone share the same ring. Despite the apparent gap (more like a grand canyon-sized chasm) in skill level Iran KO'd the **** out of Tommy and in a rematch beat him again. Do you think long-shot Barkley could pull off the same type of upset(s) against SRL?
It's not a "Longshot" IMHO:bart Iran would simply club SRL into submission, to big, to young & to strong for Leonard. Iran's jab would play havoc with Leonard, this is a beat down of monumental proportions. This ai'nt a weight crippled one armed one legged Donny Lalonde. SRL is gassed out by 6 & then gets mashed:deal
SRL didn't do much at middleweight and above. Apart from nicking that decision over a fading Hagler, the rest of SRL's excursions into 160 and above were very tough. Barkley was a big middleweight, and a determined, vicious one. I think Iran would beat Ray, tbh. I think Barkley would beat up Lalonde too.
Barkley claims that the decision in his fight vs duran was a politial one. he says Leonard wouldn't face him so they gave duran the decision because leonard would fight duran again. To me, it looked like Duran won legit.
Yeh Duran/Barkley was indeed a coin toss, in all reality it was expected to be an Iran wipeout but Duran showed that night what he really is all about. I've scored that fight a narrow win for duran & a draw. If you look at the 9/10/11/12 all going to roberto + the knockdown then he only had to take 2 from the first 8 rounds & he's the guv'ner. No way could Leonard keep up that workrate that Duran employed against Barkley, absolutly incredible.
Watch the behind the glory video about duran it was funny how duran's son and daughter were like, "dad, what are you thinking about? look at the size of that guy!" *The durans kids speak english BTW, i suspect it is their first language.
H's not held in low regard on here. SRL gets his proper prop's, just a case of the fact that most on here saw through the SRL smoke & mirrors roadshow many many years ago.:yep
There's every possibility that Iran could have walked off with Marvins belts, the guard always has to change at some time. I'm not sure who were the mandatories for marvins belts at the time?
Herol Graham and Thomas Hearns were, I think. Barkley, Kinchen, Olajide were up there too in the top 3 slots, I believe. Robbie Sims, but he was never going to fight Marvin.
