Round 3

Calic walks into the jab applying pressure, then holds. Lunging overhand right by Calic, countered with the right jab as Ward boxes on the back foot. Calic is falling into him and leaning his bulky frame down on him. Ward is bouncing his right fist off Calic's face. Double left cross by Ward. Calic holds. Right by Calic, countered by Ward's left. Ward is peppering him with the jab and then slapping underhand to the torso. Calic is rocked out of a clinch by a 1-2 between his gloves. Ward is mixing in to the body while circumnavigating Calic. Lots of incidental headlocks as Calic dives in and gets his neck shoehorned into the crook of Ward's arm. Clubbing combination by Calic. Not enough to steal it.

All three judges have it 30-27 to Ward.

 

Round 4

Calic is visibly tiring, throwing arm punches from too far out. Ward is flicking the jab up from its cradle at his belly. He eats a big Calic right hand but nails him back with a left. Both mildly stunned. 1-2 to the body by Calic diving in, missing and grabbed/hauled to the ropes by Ward. Lead right hook by Ward, soft and picked off as Calic backs up into a corner. Lots of clinching down the stretch. Shoeshine to the side and navel area by Ward.

All three judges have it 40-36 to Ward.

 

Round 5

Calic is running away from Ward, hands at his sides. Ward keeps sticking the right jab above his belt line in pursuit. Ward catches up to Calic and is pulled in and held. Calic steps back and paws a jab. Ward slices in with a left and Calic jerks back against the ropes to dodge. Ward is drilling the body, then working his way up to smack Calic to either side with ping-pong hooks. The Croatian is keeping a high guard pinned to his face and keeping out a fair amount when Ward headhunts, but the body shots are all getting through and all affecting him, causing the odd stumble as he walks the length of the ropes. Calic is in survival mode. He just about makes it.
