yeah..and he was actually a pretty big hitter, but he never won the legitment heavyweight championship of the world by smashing the **** out of its legitment champion.

I think they went up to 6 ounce gloves by then, at least for championship fights.

Look at who he was fighting though. Most of these people were complete bums with no real boxing training. :bbb

if you measured the punch force with a accurate rocky 4 type machine..i wouldnt be suprised if he was.

however, lots of things come into boxing..if you get angles and hit guys when they dont expect/see it you will knock guys out with shots that wouldnt otherwise stop them.

well, firpo was 2 but he was a legit contender, 25-2. Of course dempsey did run throw a string of guys in one round who were no hoppers. Gunboat smith was 2, he was a legit guy and carl morris was 1 and legit. Fred Fulton 1st round...

That sparring partner was hopelessly outgunned.

It's something to tell the grandchildren about, for sure.

If gloves made such a difference why were there not many heavyweights from that day with so many Kos and first round Ko's? Why were there not many heavyweights during Louis time with such destructive power as he wore 5 and 6 oz gloves? Dempsey wore 5 oz gloves, Louis wore 5 and 6 oz, Marciano 6 oz, Ali 6 and 8 oz. Dempsey, Louis and Marciano were all time KO punchers and they would have been so whether they wore 5 oz or 8 oz gloves.

Interestingly there is a clip within that video that shows the end of the Dempsey/Sharkey bout from a completely different angle than the film that is typically shown. It was filmed by Pathe France. Obviously they must have filmed the entire bout and what a FIND if this was ever to come to lite! HOWEVER I did contact them regarding this and their film of the Firpo fight (they were there also) and they told me all they had was that short clip of the Sharkey fight and that was it. Someone somewhere must have them unless like other nitrate films they have destroyed themselves over time.

I don't see how people can view him as some huge hitter.. most of his KO's weren't one punch shots.. they were accumulation KO's..

You don't think gloves make a difference? Go and do some sparring and find out if gloves make a difference.:patsch

I's not just the weight, which is mostly negligible, it's the padding which makes the difference.

I own a pair of Everlast 6 oz and 8 oz gloves. VERY little difference and if you think this level of difference is going to make a difference with crushing punchers like Dempsey, Louis and Marciano your deluding yourself. These are legendary all time punchers we are talking about here.

Yes, try going and comparing gloves from the turn of the century or the fifties to a modern padded 10 oz glove. Noticeable difference in sharpness and accuracy. You own them that's nice, try doing an experiment where you are using them.

I didn't say it would completely reduce their power, but you are deluding yourself if you don't think it makes a difference.
