Who Was The Greater Fighter Salvador Sanchez or Ruben Olivares

If Olivares had retired after Castillo III he'd still be greater than Sanchez.

Olivares was inconsistent post-118 (and had some iffy showings there or at least met his match in Herrera) but Sal' only had a short career. You have to cut both a bit of slack in each respect when comparing them with another.

Still, I wouldn't have them far apart from each other. Olivares stops green Sal' at 118 and Sanchez likely stops the best featherweight Olivares.

Still, VERY interesting to see how Sanchez would fare against Olivares in boxing mode. Think it could stunt his rhythm a bit, even thing I'm not huge on Olivares as a feather. Still, the version that Alexis eventually tracked down could give Sanchez some issues despite Sal' and Arguello being completely different stylistically.

 

Or for that matter, Ring Magazine.

 

Hard one. DEfinitely I´m more impressed when I watch Sanchez......BUT when I put all things on the table I think is fair to say that Ruben beat better fighters....well, even then it´s close......
I would vote Sanchez.....

 

Sanchez died young but had a great career,his wins over Danny Lopez,Gomez,Nelson were excellent wins and he rose to the occasion when he had to, shame he died so young

Ruben Olivares was on of my favorite fighters had a long undefeated run to the title and had impressive skills, negatives were Ruben was not always in great condition and this caused him to fight outside of his best weight...Ruben was a heavy party-er and it caused him losses but his career is deep and thick

If I had to go with the perfect snap-shot as opposed to a career that overstayed its welcome I would have to give SS the nod as the greater fighter for 2 reasons, never lost and was always in great condition and had KO wins over some ATG's

 

I would say that Gomez and especially Nelson were not great fighters at the time Sanchez beat them........but you have a point, and I said it was close in this aspect too.
I rate Castillo pretty high nowadays after I watch him more...

Consider wherethey were at: Gomez was not good at 126 and Nelson was not at his peak.

Agreed. A lot of people skim over the fact that he didn't face the long established no.2

You can't give Pedroza the credit for being no.1 without beating Sal' either don't get me wrong.

 

I think Sanchez's great wins are rather thin, Gomez coming up in weight Lopez dynamite puncher who could be outboxed without too much trouble, one dimensional Laporte, novice Nelson,and a split dec over Cowdell. If Olivares had stayed in the shape Sanchez was always in ,this thread would not even be viable imo.

Castillo as well. He gave a good effort against Arguello and Sanchez actually.

But yes, I'd tend to agree. Olivares stopped Rudkin never knocked out previously (early career cut stoppage), wasted Rose who could be hurt but was a big bantam and whilst other brilliant contenders were pushing Rose mega close Olivares spanked him (and Rose went on to beat Guts at lightweight, who Anj considers a 'dominant' lightweight champion eventually), stopped Sakurai, Olympic Gold medallist and a tricky southpaw boxer, 2-1 with Castillo.

Herrera had his number. It happens when you fight a consistently high level of competition. And sure he was patchy post-bantamweight title but that tends to happen after 65 fights and a high life.

And yes, his K.O ratio is ridiculous, and such a skilled fighter as well.

No debate for me, even if I'd only have Olivares one or two places above Salvador in a Mexican ATG list.
