I'll be watching Castillo-Olivares I later on. Things to look out for? I'd like to hear what you guys think the man's strengths and weaknesses were before I watch any footage.
From my experience, you've got a decent enough eye that I think you'll spot what's good about him straight away, and I think you'll like him. It's quicker to list his 'weaknesses' to be honest. He wasn't lightning quick, but outside of that it's tough to criticise him. Olivares I isn't his best showing, so you might appreciate him more once you watch some other stuff.
He was a lightning quick thinker though. Makes up for it. Addie, watch Chucho sit Caraballo on his arse with a jab a few times.
I still think he was pretty quick though. Definitely above average in a physical sense and like you say, greasy quick on the mental side of things coupled with great timing and anticipation.
It's like those who say Arguello was slow. Of foot? Yeah, pretty much. But in terms of handspeed the only criticism you can make of Arguello is that he wasn't lightning quick.
Watch closely and you can see Kobayashi saying '' You're hands are vely srow, El Flaco!'' right at the point all the air ****s off from his body and his ribs puncture his lungs......
Savage that. Arguello's most devastating showing IMO and contender for most brutal body shots ever (seeing as they lift the Jap' off his feet)
In fairness to Kobayashi, he didn't say Arguello couldn't punch - only that he couldn't punch fast. Just sayin'.
Kobayashi was hard done by to have to fight Gomez and Arguello at their best wasn't he. that left hook Gomez waxed him with is one of the best ever...then Harry Gibbs somehow lets him fight onHe'd probably be arrested nowadays if that was in Britain.
The Gomez left hook against Kobayashi reminds me a bit of Robinson against Fullmer, the way he was going backwards and caught Kobayashi coming in. Beautiful shot, it was. Brutal. Kobayashi was a very good fighter imo, if a bit one handed. Lacked real top end durability too, though you can't blame him for the Arguello and Gomez ko's. He put in some good work in both fights before he got taken out. Did they move him too quickly into the Arguello fight, do you think? There were very few names of note on his record prior, though the unbeaten win-ko ratio looked impressive at the time, no doubt.
How about that sneaky long left hook Chucho catches Olivares with 12 seconds in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wLzjbyZNj8
