Nope. Fight was close with Nunn winning by 1-2 rounds on my card. Toney was landing devastating counter shots all night and hurt Nunn on more than one occassion
Toney was doing what toney does you're right. It's been years since I watched the fight. It was one of the first Nunn fights I watched and I remember thinking damn this guys good. I had it for Nunn pretty wide when he got poleaxed
wasnt there some type of tournament (that he won)? thats why he had such a strong record . . . i think. Second too was my favourite fighter at the time, after he lost to Toney I became a HUGE Toney fan!
he had some minor drug conviction 20 years earlier , i dont even think it was jail time involved, but its on his record
Nunn had great reflexes that carried him, as well as some decent power, but he seemed to be one of those fighters that could have off nights or be out worked. He was never the same when at SMW to what he was at MW. I rated him highly
One of my all time favourites.. Ridiculously gifted and perhaps the most relaxed fighting style I have seen. Had a top 5 nickname too :yep.
Nunn presents a problem for me, in terms of ranking him. At his best, he looked unbeatable and the string of wins amassed over '88 to '90 was immensely impressive but the loss to Toney was unbelievably bad. Toney beating him was significant in a number of ways. Not only was it Nunn's first loss but it was also a defeat from a fight in which he was giving his opponent a drubbing. It laid Nunn open to criticism, in that his win streak was based on past-their-best veterans and Toney was a young guy on a rush of his own. Moreover, he never picked up his career after that and this has to count against him, despite that spell of wins. I would have liked to see the Toney loss avenged, followed by a domination of McCallum. Ironically, Toney, who was certainly not in the class of Nunn, seemingly built his early '90's status, dining out on the Nunn and McCallum bouts. To my mind, Nunn needed to put all this into perspective by beating both in a comeback. I can't comment as to why this didn't happen. There may well have been personal, commercial and or political reasons as to why the fights didn't come off. But, on paper, they needed to happen for Nunn to be a shoo in for the HOF.
Defeating Starling and Curry was nothing to write home about, and the performances themselves were relatively disappointing, but he completely outclassed Tate before destroying Kalambay, a genuine world class fighter who had never been knocked cold before. Nunn is definitely a case of what could of been but he still achieved quite a lot during his career. A world class talent.
I don't get why he bought all that coke whilst still fighting, did Nunn not look after the money he earnt whilst fighting? Was Nunn using coke whilst he was fighting or purely dealing?
I remember the 1st round knockout but i'm not that clued up on Kalambay's credentials bar me being delighted he beat Herol Graham and the 2 fights v McCallum. I might re-watch a few Kalambay fights on youtube to refresh my memory.
There were talks of him fighting Leonard and Hearns but they wanted no part of him. At his best he was the smoothest and most talented southpaw next to Hagler and Whitaker. Had the talent to carry him to greatness but coke is one hell of a drug. He was a MW version of Ali with better technical skills, IMO. Would have given RJJ fits.
