You know me Guru. Im here to school the ignorant and remind them of history, rather than how they wish it had of been.
Good post. Calzaghe showed that weight and hand issues as well as being away from home all meant nothing, when it came to beating American legends Hopkins and Jones.
Dino keeps referring to people at the end of their careers, and Calzaghe was closer to the end of his career than Hopkins and Jones

Wow, Calzaghe fanboys on the prowl..

Joe Calzaghe was a great fighter, his resume wasn't that great though, he is somewhere right inside the top 100 IMO.. History will not be too kind to him though, hell, he has only been retired 4 years and Ward is already threatening to dethrone him as the GOAT SMW.. And already has according to many people.

Fighting Roy in 2008, after twice dismissing him as a threat, did not seal his legacy.

Ward isnt close, though Americans who have a big problem with Calzaghe would like to make believe that he is, which is ridiculous.
Ward may carve a good career, but against who? Wards best win is a past best Calzaghe leftover and its not looking like it could get better due to a weak era.
You cannot compare a 22 SMW title fight winner, who won WBO WBA WBC IBF titles to a fighter who has not done half as much and won one of those titles to a faded version of a prime version Calzaghe beat.
Look at the SMW world champs Calzaghe beat in Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Brewer, Mitchell, Veit, Lacy, Kessler not to forget all of the top 10 names

Calzaghe beat 3 undefeated fighters who had or went on to claim a SMW title.

    1. Someone tell me which top undefeated fighters Ward has beaten?
    2. Tell me which top undefeated world champs Ward has fought?

    Lets read the answers
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    This content is protected

    Andre Ward............VS.............Joe Calzaghe
    Froch.....................................Kessler
    This content is protected
    (Kessler beat Froch)
    Kessler...................................Eubank
    This content is protected

Dawson..................................Lacy (Lacy a proven SMW and winner of 5 SMW title fights. Dawson no pedigree at all at SMW)
    This content is protected

Abraham.................................Mitchell (Mitchell a 2 time SMW champ who had never been clearly beaten, only lost by debateable SD in Germany to Ottke, had KOd long time SMW champ Liles, beaten a future SMW champ twice, compared to AA who had done nothing at SMW)
    This content is protected

Bika.......................................Brewer (Bikas best win became Manfredo, Brewer had beaten H Graham and was a SMW champ)
    This content is protected
(Bika was a Calzaghe left over at that time and had been out of the ring bar less than a round for a while)
Green.....................................Woodhall (Woodhall a SMW champ, who had beaten a reigning SMW champ, a world rated former champ, a future SMW champ and Branco a world rated SMW who became WBA LHW champ, who at SMW beat R Reid and G Johnson who when old and shot KOd Green)
    This content is protected

Miranda...................................Bika (Bika now a top 5 SMW had drawn with 3 time SMW champ Beyer)
    This content is protected

    Buchanan (?????)......................Sheika
    This content is protected
(Sheika was coming off a win over G Johnson and was a top 10 SMW at the time)
Camou (?????)..........................Veit (Veit a SMW title holder who had a fair resume, better than at least 2 of the current top 5 SMWs)
    This content is protected
    Then include the
    This content is protected
win and then the other top 10 SMWs and its clear Calzaghe is well ahead. I could have put
    This content is protected
ahead of Green, Camou, Miranda, Buchanon

Very clear but nobody will have a sensible answer to say otherwise, it will just be a lame Faileys losing it answer when they cant debate against

Somebody tell me how Ward has done more than that.

Nobody can counter the above or answer the questions. In fact they hide from the questions

Show us where he twice dismissed him?
Jones was a different weight division and I didnt see Ward step up to LHW and face the far less accomplished, far less as good, far less experienced Dawson.
Remember also Calzaghe agreed to fight Jones when Jones said he was dropping down to SMW, before Jones changed his mind

Lets be honest, the post contains the names of 2 boxers, both with huge fan bases. Of course there will be 'fanboys on the prowl', but great logic for pointing this out, I am sure nobody expected this to happen. :patsch

Back on topic, you are claiming people have already said that Ward has dethroned Calzaghe as the 'GOAT SMW', please feel free to share these names?

I will be totally honest with you, yes, I am a massive fan of Calzaghe. However, I 100% respect Ward, he is an amazing fighter and athlete and if anybody can achieve a greater legacy than Joe then its Ward.

But, personally I feel he has a long way to go. If he can defend the belt for 10 years and become the undisputed SMW champion then fair enough. But he fights once a year and isn't fighting Froch or Kessler untill next year. So when exactly do you expect him to claim all the SMW belts? Do you then expect him to then move up to LHW and become the Ring Magazine champion and defend it?

Calzaghe was very unlucky, if he was around for a couple more years then potentially he would have fought in the Super 6. His resume would also have been a lot better, as he would have likely beaten everyone on the way to the final against Ward, which is what the aim of this discussion is. However, he wasn't fortunate to be around, but Ward was and won it in dominating fashion, and that is probably why the majority of the community are under the opinion of Ward being the 'GOAT SMW'.

I am not gonna give names of posters that I respect that feels Ward has surpassed Calzaghe.. I suggest running a public poll if you want to know, hell I am sure there probably is one already.

I also don't buy the Calzaghe being unlucky.. There were plenty of fighters he could have fought but didn't for whatever reason, but I wont get into all of that, it has been done to death...

You didn't answer my question. Why is he closing in fast? What names have deemed Ward to already have a better legacy than Calzaghe? Can Ward continue fighting once a year and realistically become the undisputed SMW champion and defend at least one of those belts for 10 years, then move up to LHW and win the prestigious Ring Magazine belt?

Calzaghe didn't fight the like of Jones when it mattered because he didn't want to. And how do we know this? Because he said so himself, how can it be any more clear cut than that? It amazes me that people like bailey still try and argue otherwise.

There you go, you mentioned that these opinions were from posters. If you mentioned boxing analysts or commentators with real knowledge, then maybe I would have taken your post more serious.

That is the idea of the poll I created in this thread - to determine who is the greater fighter. Unfortunately, the only way this could happen is if they fought, but, this is never going to happen so that is why I began the discussion.

I wouldn't put too much into Calzaghe comforting his son if it wasn't so ****ing consistent with other statements he made to the public about how Roy was no longer great.. Wake the **** up..:patsch

You are also gonna use Jones being ahead on a single card before he was put to sleep by Lebedev as somehow making Calzaghe's win over Jones more legit?
    ****ing pathetic..:-(

You sure about that? I remember a time in 2003, when Calzaghe was in contract negotiations with Jones Jr. Instead Jones Jr chose to move up to heavyweight. Now, please tell me which fighter was doing the ducking? Also, if you want to be precise Jones Jr was always in a weight class above Calzaghe.... :patsch

Jones ducked an unknown fighter outside of America that had done nothing to get him in the ring, to fight a 230lb HW champ and make history.:lol:

    It gets better and better.

Calzaghe: "I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money."
