It is a shame. He looked to have a bright future up to the Hopkins fight. His life just seemed to go to **** after that.
He was hitting trouble well before that I think, didn't he make an utter mess of his arm in a 'DIY accident' - before all the supposed drinking problems emerged? Hopkins probably had his number anyway mind you.
I was tempted to say a strange career...certainly if you only looked at it from an in-ring POV it'd appear strange. Never really had any overly taxing fights where its been a horrific beating and you would feel had he kept it all together he should have had more to give. He actually did okay v Martinez, Hopkins mugged him but I don't tend to believe all this rubbish about Hopkins being a 'career ruiner.' It was humiliating maybe, devastating I think not. Hopkins was moving about the ring throwing looping rights, connecting with the odd one and holding and hitting. Hardly stuff to take lumps out of your career. But the more you look at it the more it seems he was just that type of guy not cut out for relative fame and fortune. Out of the ring antics seemed to take more of their tole on him than what happened in the ring unlike say Hatton where it was probably a mixture of both, and thats always a shame from a fans point of view, especially when he was relatively entertaining.
Hopefully Jermain Taylor will follow- way past his best now and worried he'll get a pasting off someone soon. Could see him thrown in with JCC Jr or something like that. Wouldn't be pretty.
One dimensional american level plodder. Ducked King Arthur for years, lucky to not get pancaked by Taylor in their first fight, and stunk the joint out in the return. Jab-Jab-Big right hand. and repeat. The end. If he wasn't american he would have always been considered a plucky gatekeeper at best. The great white hoax.
It's a safe bet he'll be back, depending on how quickly his money dwindles. It'd give it maybe a year and a half. He'll come back, but because he's abused his body, he won't have what it takes and it'll all end in tears. Not for him, he won't give a ****, his heart's not in it. But for a fans. An annoying, wildly inconsistent and pretty unsatisfying career and fighter to be honest.
Plucky gatekeepers do not win two belts in the middleweight division. Like most people said a good, but not a great fighter in his short prime.
Said this for years, easy 10/11 years and even more now of late, tattoos are for people with something missing in their make up, (no pun intended) look at me an the tattoo ive got, what 7 other lads in the pub have got. Yeah, nice one eh, individual of you that. They are not cool, bottom line is that there are that many copy cats around, that is in fact cooler not to have any. :deal
Winning it was good. Defending it against Locket, Rubio and Espino then losing it to Martinez is hardly a satisfying middleweight title reign.
All alltime greats in other eras. No way Hagler hangs around past round one against Espino. Duran vs Lockett? Mismatch for the Welshman. Leonard get smashed vs Rubio. :good
