What one you watching Ribs?

 

The Hidden Fortress. You know, the Kurosawa one that Lucas based a New Hope on? The duel with the spears reminded me about Lucas wanting him for the part.

Love Kurosawa. You seen 'Ran'?

 

Ran is my personal favourite Kurosawa film. Gorgeous.

 

Beautiful. I won't lie though I've only seen the Samurai films. Not seen any of his 'normal' movies.

 

I own Ikiru, Kagemusha, RAN, Rashomon, and Yojimbo. I've seen Seven Samurai.

 

Is Ikiru the one with the old man on a swing? If so I have seen that, years back.

 

Takashi Shimura on a swing, yes.

 

About 26 times. Incredible that he turned it and Kagemusha out in old age after trying to top himself; it was an even better comeback than Leonard against Hagler.

Sad that he and Mifune fell out for so many years though. They were the greatest director-actor collaborators ever imo: even better than Scorsese/De Niro and probably my joint favourite alongside Herzog/Kinski. Horrible, the **** that's come about Kinski though.

 

Don't start, ****'s sake. I get choked up just thinking about that scene. Wasn't Tom Hanks trying to get an American remake made a few years back?

 

I wouldn't be surprised. So ****in' glad it never came to fruition, if true.

 

Herzog/Kinski is my fave as well. Had to force myself to watch a few over the last week to make sure I could still be awed and keep that **** outta my head. I've come to the conclusion I can as I always knew Klaus was a mentalist, now I know he was a nasty piece of work as well. Oh, well.

 

Anyone see anything by Ozu. Unique.style. Just.seen Tokyo Story.

Who's the guy that did 'Tokyo Drifter' and 'Branded To Kill'? Seijun Suzuki??? Well, I've seen nothing else by him but they are both unique viewing experiences.

 

I suppose I'm pretty much in the same boat; the bloke was clearly cracked and twisted to ****. Not that it excuses what he did, but when you read about his early life it was probably enough to make anyone cracked and twisted.

I watched Aguirre again the other day with all of it in mind. It's still an unequivocally brilliant headtripping kaleidoscope of a film with maybe the greatest performance of all time at it's centre. That said, the implied incest in the film sort of takes on an ironic and disturbing edge to me now.
