Steve Collins: I'll be ready for Roy Last Updated: January 22 2013, 18:20 GMT Steve Collins has already started training for his proposed fight with Roy Jones Jnr and plans to silence his old rival with a knockout The 48-year-old Irishman retired from boxing in 1997, but he has agreed to return against ring legend Jones and the pair are awaiting offers to stage the bout. Former trainer Freddie Roach has advised Collins about his preparations and he will be trained in Dublin by his brother Paschal, who works with middleweight Gary O'Sullivan. "I'm back in training a week now," he told Ringside podcast Toe 2 Toe. "My brother Paschal is going to be my coach. He's got the gym, the knowledge and the expertise. "We were both over in LA with Freddie, had a good chat about the whole thing." When asked about his physical condition, Collins added: "I feel like I've never been away. This is a fight that I've always wanted. I've never thought about coming back, I absolutely had no interest in coming back. "I don't need financially to come back, but this fight is different. It's unfinished business." Collins defeated Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn during his three-year reign as WBO super-middleweight champion and is confident he will send 44-year-old Jones into retirement with a crushing defeat. "It's something that should have happened 15 year ago," he said. "Roy's talking about retiring. He talking about being inducted into the Hall of Fame and so on, but people always ask him: 'why did he not fight Steve Collins?' "I've accused him of running and he said he never ran. He's said he will fight me now and my reply to that is if Roy Jones believes and thinks I've gone soft in my old age, he's made a big mistake. "I said I'll knock him out now, like I'd have knocked him out 15 years ago. Who in their right mind would pay for this farce.Who in their right mind would sanction such a fiasco? This has Euro-trash written all over it.
The sad thing is he probably will K.O Jones Jr.....Oh how you fell from grace Roy! I used to think you were superman!
What sham organization will sanction this atrocity of a fight? Jones shouldnt even be given a licence to fight anymore let alone Collins!
Roy obviously needs money... And if he is gonna fight on, i would much rather it be another shot fighter... He seems to turn back the clock as long as they are also shot, almost puts them on an even field.. Its the mediocre young fighters, that are in their prime that Roy seems to have trouble with.
collins had a jaw of steel and was one great fighter. but, at 48 and long removed from action one has to expect he will look terrible. that being said, jones is on the verge of being hurt really badly the longer he fights. collins called out roy continually before he retired, when roy was at his supposed peak, but roy never wanted to fight him. Now, it is a sideshow.
Jones KO1. Jab wobbles, follow up finishes, probably within a minute. Roy is shot to a trillion pieces, but he's not retired with a brain injury and out for 15 years shot.
