Incorrect. Anyone with good knowledge of the technical side of boxing can see that a punch isn't landing by the reaction & movement of the opponent's head. It was VERY obvious during Pac-Bradley, as it was in Pac-JMM 1,2, and (especially) 3. Likewise, a good student of the sport knows when a fighter has actually been hurt by a punch. Lampley, on the other hand, is literally clueless. Sometimes I have to turn off the sound when watching an HBO fight, just so my head doesn't explode from all the 100% incorrect things he says. --------- Lampley does have a very nice hairpiece, though. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...kj8DUeroMPS20AH1lYGwDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CIgBEP4dMAw
A good student of the sport is rare. Take this forum for example, most people think they're a good student of the sport when in reality they aren't.. ESPECIALLY during the heat of a superstar fight. If you're of the few who can actually call a fight, Lampley will probably suck but he's satisfactory for the other 90% of fans. HBO is famous for its quality, and they didn't hire Lampley without reason. He generates excitement for the casual fan, which outnumbers the hardcore fan by A LOT!
^ Sadly, Norbix, you are probably correct! Luckily, we also have guys here like Vysotsky, Bogotazo, Moparfan, IB, Chef, Eddie Chambers, etc who really, REALLY know their stuff.
I actually like the Lampley, Merchant, and Jones/Foreman/Steward team... I think Lampley is also a good fight caller.. Not a genius analyzer by any means, but the excitement in his voice is great... I can remember many amazing moments in boxing history, that the sound of Lampley's voice, choice of words and energy were a part of making them great, and will be forever remembered by me..
He sounds good and all that, but the problem is he often calls the action horribly wrong and tends to call imaginary punches while ignoring solid blows.
I'll chime in that Lampley sucks. Merchant was beyond horrible, and should have walked away 5 years ago at the least.
Nice post. I consider myself somewhere between a casual and hardcore fan (hopefully closer to hardcore than casual but I suppose that depends on perspective ) and though I am usually arguing with my TV during a fight, I agree that the experienced is enhanced by these fellas. Its not often I become so disgusted that I hit the mute button. Would also like to mention Ward, Tarver, Bernstein. Also enjoy the fnf crew, Atlas, Tessitore and Brian Kenney.
