Holmes has some other decent choices for "best fight" but I chose the Cooney bout as it featured the best example of his cautious, yet intelligent and opportunistic style in the biggest megafight of the decade. To be THAT good and that focused in that pressure-cooker environment says a lot.

3 and 5. There are pros out there now who couldn't tell you there are either.

True enough.I've been around plenty of amatuers and the odd pro who knew only a bare minimum about fighters from past era's, it's just not a big deal for most fighters.I can imagine there are a fair number of young fighters out there right now who would only have seen or know a slim amount about every one of the 10 Sal listed.

Why hank over that time Tiger kicked the **** out of Fullmer? Or Torres?

An absolute war where Tiger won every round. Hank was solid.

I think I only have Fullmer fights with rounds missing don't I? Don't we?!? Hank, or the destruction of Fernandez. Or stopping Webb, hard to do even if he was rusty and past his best. Fullmer. Many good performances. Considering he probably wasn't well, Benvenuti too.

I'm partial to a bit of Tiger-Carter as well. Tiger really was a force.

Oh i've seen the hank fight. I just thought his retiring Fullmer was more impressive. But its not a bad call.

I wasn't suggesting you hadn't, just that the basics of that fight are enough for me to be majorly impressed. Probably because hearing it was a war going into it (and it was) but seeing Tiger clearly establish himself the victor made it more impressive.

Yes Manassa; Tiger is an easy fighter to enjoy when on form.

Liking this thread by the way.

Did you choose the fight with Iran (for Toney obviously) because you don't think he beat McCallum in either fight? I think a draw with Mike is more impressive than beating up a guy who had lost to a lightweight. An old lightweight. Hell 'breaking down' Nunn might be more impressive even though he was slipping.

Wasn't Barkley coming off a win over the lineal light heavyweight champ' at the time? Or am I getting my chronology askew?

That was my thinking, as well as a easy victory against a big, strong opponent.

Nunn was his best win but taking the whole performance? A few solid rounds and an amazing finish but Nunn was on the slide.

To play devils advocate that lineal light heavyweight champion was.a former welterweight himself. And let's ignore Nunn; what about McCallum?

Barkley was faded against Toney and had basically abandoned whatever skills he once had in favour of slowly marching forward throwing clubbing punches.Had no business back at 168 by then.

It's still a good showcase for Toney, but i think i'd go with The jones fight myself.

Watch Tapia Vs Nana Konadu, Philly. Total domination of a very dangerous, if sometimes Clottey-esque lackadaisical, puncher.

    Not clear enough.

And 'former welterweight' means little to me. Hearns looked bigger than Hill and Barkley didn't need a Hail Mary to beat him either.
