I do believe this actually. These are two of the biggest p4p punchers in history by my reckoning. The only man I'd definitely say the couldn't knock out is Ali (I see him as unstoppable)
You think? Who did Carpentier ever knock out outside of Levinsky, that really illustrates his power? He either went the distance with or lost to the greatest fighters he faced. I cant really think of one elite scalp he knocked out. Heres a question some of you may have an idea about, and let me preface this by saying I dont mean to be non P.C. or prejudice but has anyone ever heard anything about Carpentier being gay? I know he was married and had a daughter but in old film clips where he talks he sounds very effiminate and Ive seen a couple of mentions in old newspapers of him being "girlish." I used to see him on television in France and you couldnt really tell then because he was old and years of smoking made him sound like Patty and Selma from the Simpsons but when he was young it sure looked like a possibility. Not that theres anything wrong with that, I was just curious.
Just a few. Carpentier flattened Bomb.Billy Wells twice, Joe Becket 1rd, both heavyweights one right hand, and Ted Kid Lewis one right hand. Carpentier by all accounts had a fast and deadly right cross when he landed...
Every one of Well's losses is by KO. Some of which are brutal. He did not have a sturdy set of whiskers. Beckett also lost most of his losses by KO. Neither of the two were world class fighters. Lewis was an aging welterweight. That match would not even be allowed today and should not have been allowed then.
I think more often than not Wells was stopped by body punches. He had the ability but not the temperament to be top level.
Against Moir, and Jack Bloomfield we can see him getting stopped by blows to the jaw. Bloomfield devastated him. Moran knocked him out with a blow to the jaw. He was decked several times by blows to the jaw by Palzer, once by a bodyblow, before he collapsed and the sponge was thrown in. Gunboat Smith knocked him down three times with headshots, the last of which kept him down. Carpentier beat him in one of their bouts with body punching but its pretty safe to say that at the very least Wells was not a durable fighter and isnt a great measuring stick for anyones punching power.
Wells was a decent straight left boxer, with fair power, but lacked the killer instinct , he was beating Palzer but took his foot off the pedal. Moir, Moran ,and Smith were all good punchers, losses to Beckett, and Bloomfield are less harder to forgive.
Dempsey by all standards of the times had a terrific chin. Sure he was dropped by bullish Firpo and when he was shot and old by Tunney, but got up immediately from a blow to the side of the head...
