ANTHONY Mundine is a wonderfully talented athlete, no doubt. But the best ever? Mundine repeated it twice yesterday - "I'm the best athlete ever, man. Ever," - but the problem for Mundine is that ever since he first said it, he has been the only one saying it.

    Ambrose Palmer:
Played 83 games for Footscray and also won Australian middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight titles. In Australian Boxing Hall of Fame.

Palmer would have worn Choc out by making him miss, and counter punching him. Palmer's lightening left jab would have provided an easy means of defusing a Choc attack.

Very difficult to try to rate and compare fighters of today with fighters of seven decades ago.

Palmer once fought 3 x 15 round bouts in a period of 23 days !!!!
and his opponents, fighters like: Jack Hains, Jack Omaley, Fred Henneberry, Young Stribling (and he spotted Stribling 20 kilo in weight - don't think choc would ever do this), Ron Richards, etc.

You just cannot compare the older brew to the younger brew.

Oldies win hands down every time IMO. I tend to think that the difficult times they faced each other, the roundage, the weight differences between middleweights, who would take on heavyweights....

Palmer would have beaten Chock and his dad on the same night, tooooo experienced, toooo smart in ring craft, tooooo nice a bloke to ever tell you so.

83 three games of AFL is about as hard as playing one game of under 16 league...

You know, there needs to be more said about the fighter of old.

The sweet 'science' was studied by them....boxers made sure that they gained a greater knowledge of the techniques involved in maintaining and supporting their health and continuance in the sport.

I know that the Mundine camp does this also, and that Anthony has been trained very well in boxing. His move to fight as a light middle was a brave and strategic move.

If I was asked what was the greatest or most noteable thing that the 7 decades have produced/or been noticable, it would be the solid, muscular weight factor in the fighters of today.

Back then, food was different, supermarkets were in the form of short-stocked milk bars,. Performance drugs and growth potions were not available.

There was a huge difference in training also , Palmer never, ever, ever used a piece of weight to produce a muscle......all of the work he did, and as a boxing trainer was done au-naturale, with no weights.....(no mitterns either)

Today, boxers are built like bulls on hormones, and weights like fly and bantam are fairytails of small human beings existing long ago who were starving due to economic depression. Once upon a time boxers were regarded as gentlemen, and admired for their achievements. Now they market themselves in sheer stupid statements, and provide the greater support for wisdom in the old statement: "empty vessels make the bigger sounds" ....as don henley wrote: "Everything is Different Now"

C'mon, that's a bit silly......... Tony Mundine was rated one of the best middleweights in the world at his prime yet you have Ambrose beating him and his silly son on the same night :patsch

Kahu Mahanga knocked out Tony.....reason? he found Tony's explicit fault.
....regularly over reaching with his left jab, whilst dropping his right glove (as a chin coverer)
You telling me, Amby would not have found this ?

    Jennifer Smith.
Olympian one sport and national amateur champ in another. And a girl
Is that better than 83 AfL games? You could play 83 games of League and not touch the ball.

Scroll down on this one to 2008 Australian Women's championship.

What about guys who fought in wars and then returned to excel at elite level sport?
Or is Chocs selection criteria so vague that it only counts if you move down a weight division, stand on one foot and squint one eye.
She's got blonde hair so I guess Auntie Doris gets the credit for this one.

of course, you are talking about......Keith Miller: Played 50 games for St Kilda and 55 cricket Tests for Australia, considered Australia's greatest all-rounder.

when asked why miller never seemed to feel preasure in test matches he replied. (paraphrased) "when you have a messershmidt on your tail at 20,000 feet, you understand real preasure. cricket is just a game.."

    Note.
We could argue the finer points between David Boon and the greatest ALL ROUNDER of all time Keith Miller AM,MBE.

Choc can't be an all rounder in one sport. He is better at running than he is at catching so he chose boxing.
