The problem I think Sky and Hearn have with that scenario is that they have to pay those other promoters, it's not going to come out of Hearn's pocket and Sky have lost a lot of their market share to other broadcasters and are tightening the coffers.

Plus boxing is expensive to stage and lets face it, some of Hatton and Maloney's events on Sky weren't exactly the best in terms of the whole production, not to mention some shocking fights. There isn't enough money to just add extra promoters into the fold broadcasting separate co-ordinated events on the same night. That takes time and effort and money and doesn't really make sense if you're Sky and Hearn.

I agree with you though Ishy, they don't need a head liner like Bellew or Brook on every card if they can't make the dates, a really stacked domestic card with good competitive fights is more than enough to keep me happy. Hearn just needs to add to the stable with some more good young fighters and bring them on in entertaining match ups. A good fight is a good fight and good entertainment, doesn't matter if they're households names or just prospects so long as they're even matched and the styles gel!

So who are good promoters in the UK?

Hearn is the best and thats not really a compliment. The rest are ****.

 

Basing that on the number of regular Sky cards Frank produced in recent years. Outside of PPV he didn't have that many.

 

Sky need to be realistic and accept that Hearn has to bring fighters through and that not every card can be a super fight or a world title fight. If Hearn gives a good account of himself for at least 75% of the dates then he will have done a decent job in my opinion. Say what you like about Prizefighter and it's not something I've ever been a fan of but the last one was entertaining to watch!

If he has relatively successful promotions like that on for the most part and also puts on some top level world title fights then I think Sky will be happy. It's a work in progress in Matchroom they're still a relatively new outfit under Eddie Hearn so they'll have to work on it and improve it as they go along, we can't expect miracles.

You would think Adam Smith would have been good as head of boxing at Sky but to be honest the man hasn't got a ****ing clue.

 

We dont really know who the good promoters are .... because of the ridiculous exclusive deal that Sky made with Hearn we'll never see the smaller promoters develop. As stated earlier, the dates should have been out, open season and let Sky pick the ones they wanted based on quality.

 

How do you think Hearn got that exclusive deal?

Hennsey, W*rren, Maloney and Hattons all have or had TV.

You can see that Coldwell is a good promoter with no TV. Hardknocks and Steve Woods also.

 

Why do you think that?

I think Boxing on Sky has dramatically improved since he took over.

 

I think what Sky wanted was consistency. It is harder to work with 4 different promoters than it is to work with 1 and they obviously want to keep it simple and develop a consistent relationship with one promoter where they know each others methods and it works smoothly rather than having to deal with several different operators and having to go through how it all works over and over.

I'm looking at it from a broadcasters point of view rather than as a boxing fan, my missus works in TV so I hear this bull **** on a daily basis, and that's what they want it's a lot more work to spread things out like that for Sky and based on the previous cards of the promoters you'd have to say Hearn deserved it.

 

In some ways maybe, the production is better but the decision to give Hearn free reign was absurd imo, less boxing overall, hardly any american cards, poor commentating, biased analysis and the continuation of Prizefighter.

I understand that Sky is a massive company and are set in their ways but apart from the production and the odd good card, I can't see the improvement.
