Too late mate, It still riles me that out of a measly 20 dates a year, 6 has to be that shite.

 

I think the improvement overall, if you're Sky, is that their complete annual boxing package is now a more polished, viewer friendly, higher profile operation. It's been strengthened to them by removing the inferior cards, consolidating to just quality productions and removing the amateur looking events with one head line fight and a lot of poorly matched prospects, if the head line fight flops like the first Quigg/Munroe fight did then the whole show is total waste. Sky don't want viewers being put off or pissed off by those shows, so they got rid of them.

It's not an improvement to US because we get less boxing, before we had Hearn and all the others too now we have half as much and just Hearn. We did get a great night in Froch/Bute though and we have Bellew, Brook, Barker, and Frampton all getting close to their world title shots too at some stage, Brook is already there and Barker will get another if he stays fit.

 

Totally agree there, they should be picking those fights up, the big american fights are always going to be watched or recorded by boxing fans as a matter of course and they seem to have neglected that area a lot recently.

 

Icemax hit the nail on the head earlier, the dates should have been up for grabs with all promoters fighting for them, best card wins the date, it should have been that simple.

 

How can boxing have improved when the channel only has restricted access to a small proportion of fighters out there?

 

To be honest, i quite like the arrangement - as mentioned, the production / event is now generally a lot better. a lot of the old sky cards were friday night fights such as quigley v smith etc, which the equivalent would now be on Loaded tv. I know BN is an extra expense, but this is the schedule we have on tv over the next few weeks, domestic only

this isn't including the German shows on boxnation such as sturm on fri, and the all german WBO eliminator for clevs belt. That is pretty stacked for 2 solid months - don't really know how we could fit much more in to be honest.

So now, we are getting the quality produced shows from sky, then other shows from 5, loaded and BN. Not bad at all to me

I think you can make a case that domestic boxing has improved, boxing in general on Sky hasn't. The international output is awful.

 

plus not forgetting the coldwell app where he has 3 confirmed shows

I don't know, everything considered I can't see the notable improvements under him, there are pro's and cons before him and with him in charge, for somebody that has been around the sport for as long as he has and been at sky, I expected more.

 

Not Smiths fault directly but I much preferred Prizefighter being on in the week as an "extra" instead of a Saturday and counting towards Skys total boxing output.

 

How would promoters negotiate fights though? A big part of the money coming in is from the TV stations, so how could you make a big fight without that guaranteed sum of money? Even if a promoter comes up with a great show and books three very entertaining fights, there's nothing stopping another promoter from outdoing him. If that happens, the second promoter gets the date and the first promoter has to put on a very good show without much income, meaning they'll lose loads of money.

What Sky said to all their promoters was perfectly fair. Had Hatton, Maloney and Frank bothered to put on good cards instead of their usual dross, they'd still be sharing dates with Hearn. Instead, they were their typical lackadaisical selves and because of it, they were rightly booted off Sky.

 

I'd presume the first promoter would sign a contract with Sky for that card to be televised before he got too far down the road of paying for the venue/ boxers etc? If Sky don't want it the card doesn't get past the planning stage, if Sky do want it then the contracts are signed and the card goes ahead.

But why sign shut the door on them and sign exclusively with Hearn Jack? Give Hearn is x-amount of dates if you think he is the best promoter out there but leave yourself the option of bringing in other guys to meet any shortfall.
