I was wondering what muscles are best to work on to increase punching power, I know technique comes first but I was just wondering. Also what about the jab? I notice not a lot body movement going on with the jab, do your arm muscles matter at all for that punch? thanks for reading:bbb P.S. coach told me im a heavy hitter, just want to see if I can increase it more.
stay away from isolation movements (some trics are good..but even than dips should be all you will need and will also work your core) dont do biceps....back is good..deadlifts..that also rows and lat pull downs....shoulder press, maybe some lat raises but dont focus on that...you want compond movments. You only have so much engery to spend on lifting if you are also boxing..you want to make what you do matter. Bench press is ok, i would do a 5x5...core movement..abs..... also some poly drills for the your legs, squats too.....some leg press. some other guys can give you a full workout.
you dont really box do you dumb****... bicep curls are about as worthless as they come for boxing...the bicep muscle doesnt really come into the punch. However, your lats and back muscles do come in. In order to hit those muscles, you tend to also hit the bicep (pull ups of course do that..thats why many boxers who dont lift still have big biceps) but working the bicep muscle in isolation is a waste of time and engery, and could even be seen as counter productive. I know for myself that when I lift biceps heavy I have found my arms tighten up. You might say that is just anecdotal, but I have heard plenty of others say that as well.
Yeah i would say those are the best..of course abs..but most people hit those with conventional old school calestics.
Squat and dead lift? Why not clean and press, why not push press, why not KB swings... Don't fall in love with 'power comes from legs' it's your body working as a whole. You could train your legs for a lifetime but if your core and arms are weak you won't punch any harder.
squats are about the best lifting movement for anything though...and all the weight on your body actually does strength the core. Deadlifts works your back allot..and even your arms in a static way. however i would say you should do some other things as well.
