The Competitiveness of Mayweather-Cotto

Agreed. Floyd may not be prime, but he's not far from his peak. Jail may have changed that.

He's been cornered by lesser fighters in his prime. People saying he could have boxed circles around him at will and stood toe to toe for excitement aren't keeping that in mind. He's better at fighting off the ropes than he is controlling the center, but that's also where some of his opponents have landed their best shots.

I would have liked to see him make Floyd lead more. It was clearly working, but perhaps it was movement that demanded too much energy. Then again he hopped around against Margarito for the whole fight.

 

You can't even spell your idols name or put together a sentence that makes sense. I think it's time to trim those eyebrows, not to sure you can see the keys on the keyboard.

 

I think Cotto's jab was the key. I've always thought that he was one of the best jabbers in the sport, and Mayweather had trouble dealing with that punch.

One moment I really liked was when he backed Mayweather into the corner -- Mayweather went into his shoulder-roll stance, ready for the opponent to make the usual mistake of throwing wide, frantic hooks to land something against him, which he could then roll and counter. Cotto, however, maintained his distance, didn't smother his own work, and simply jabbed at him three times. The first two were grazing, but the final one snapped Mayweather's head back. It was so refreshing to see someone using smart tactics and just shooting simple, straight shots down the middle rather than losing their head and flailing. There were also moments where Cotto used the jab while Mayweather was in the middle of throwing combinations, and that worked well too.

I did as did most everyone else did including the judges. One judge had it 10-2. Guys on this board think Cotto is special for some reason. His biggest win is Mosley who has 50% record since 2001.

 

Beating Mosley years fresher than Floyd did might just even be the best single victory between the two atsch

Very clear 116-112 for Mayweather.

The 4th or 5th most competitive match Floyd has been in since Aragón.

 

I had it tied doing into the 11th and 12th and Floyd closed the show with two awesome rounds and Cotto gassed at the end as expected

Cotto put in one of his best performances in the Margarito rematch. His accuracy and combination punching were incredibile that night. He couldn't miss and used great movement to avoid be cornered.
That was a great Cotto who got outgunned and had trouble landing on a Floyd with no legs.

 

Always said it and can't believe people didn't expect this. Cotto's style will always give a defensive fighter trouble, his style is made to trouble/beat defensive fighters. Cotto pretty much forced Mayweather to open up and be aggressive due to his own counter punching style. This style, while affective, is not the style to successfully defeat Mayweather. An overly aggressive fighter with a punch and a chin is the style to beat Mayweather, a fighter that wouldn't stop coming forward, force him on the ropes and make it ugly up-close by throwing everywhere(body, chest, shoulders, neck..etc).

 

I liked this too, and the acknowledgment by Floyd was funny.

 

Cotto's style was always built to give Mayweather trouble. That's why so many people were interested in them fighting each other back when Cotto was prime.

 

It could be the same for you *****s.

I had it 4-4, and then mayweather upped it in the championship rounds.

Had only cotto dug deeper in the last 4 rounds maybe the result could have been different, easier said than done against the worlds best.

Respect to cotto though for bringing it, he always does.
