    Boxing: Lewis to meet Bowe

    Saturday 18 June 1994

Lewis will earn pounds 12m and Bowe nearly pounds 9m, according to the champion's financial backer, Pannos Eliades.

This depends upon Lewis's successful mandatory defence against Oliver McCall at Wembley in September and Bowe winning a comeback fight
'We're looking forward to Lewis being recognised as the best heavyweight,' Lewis's manager, Frank Maloney, said in London yesterday at the announcement of the deal

Bowe had lost to Holyfield by that point and was no longer in the position to be arrogant

But Bowe was the marquee name regarding himself and Lewis. Personally at that point in time Bowe beats Lewis imo, prime for prime I give the edge to Lennox.

Prime for prime Holyfield > Lewis.

    I agree.

He was quite amateurish back then he would become a much better fighter with Manny.
    I'm not so sure.
I think the Lewis that fought Mercer might have been too strong for Holyfield

Bowe's plans for bout with Lewis appear intact

August 15, 1994|By Alan Goldstein | Alan Goldstein,Sun Staff Writer

By virtue of the no-contest ruling, it appears he can go through with his $20 million fight against World Boxing Council champion Lennox Lewis in December or March. Had Bowe lost, Lewis would have been free to seek another opponent

After reaching a contract stalemate in dealing with Maloney, Newman went directly to Lewis' chief financial backer, Greek industrialist Panos Eliades, to work out the deal that will guarantee Lewis $12 million and Bowe at least $8 million.

Mar 11, 2012 - Judges' Mercy Boosts Lennox Lewis' Victory Has Fans At Loss

BY VIC ZIEGEL Saturday, May 11, 1996

The one shock, heavyweight robbery, came when the judges couldn't find it in their scorecards to give Merciless Ray Mercer a decision over Lennox Lewis. This wasn't supposed to be a close fight but nobody told Mercer, who hasn't had a win in his two fights since November 1993. The 35-year-old Mercer is tough, has never been stopped, but he's a reliable loser

at that time in 1994? after some warring rounds with Evander Holyfield? apparently you didnt see the reults of those fights look at Golota Bowe, Lewis would have killed Bow

    Boxing: Lewis deal trumps Duva

    HARRY MULLAN

    Sunday, 19 June 1994

Frank Maloney, whose dollars 31m deal for the Lennox Lewis v Riddick Bowe fight was completed behind the Duvas' back, had better bring Lewis along as his minder when he next encounters the formidable Lou and his lawyer son Dan

But even Lou's temper cools in time, and some kind of compensation will be worked out before Lewis and Bowe face each other. The date and venue will not be finalised until after Lewis's September defence against his mandatory challenger, Oliver McCall, but February in Las Vegas seems a good bet

Friday's announcement was sweet revenge for Maloney and Lewis

I dont get why you fan boys are crying about this so what!!! are you saying that Lewis took a Dive against McCall? why do we forget that Bowe dumped his title in the trash rather than to face Lewis?
and in the end what is the significance of this thread? this was almost 20 years ago guys Lewis moved on to bigger and better fights including scoring a TKO in the 6th over Todays WBC Heavyweight Champ Vitali Klitschko

A fight where the challenger emerged with far more credit than Lewis, although you'd never guess by the fanboys like you on here.

 Wut? So you think Lewis ducked Bowe by purposefully losing to McCall?

I've never been a fan of Bowe but in '94 he would have beaten Lewis.

Plus Bowe lost to Holyfield in '93 and fought Golota in '96, during the three years whilst he had slipped a little he still fought Mathis jr, Donald in 1994 and in 95 he fought Hide, Gonzalez and ko'd Holyfield in their rubber match (something a prime Lewis couldn't do to a past his prime Holyfield ). At the same time a Lewis was rebuilding against Lionel Butler and ****** Fortune.

Again let me say I think if they had fought in 94 Bowe was too good all round for Lewis.

Prime for prime Lewis would stop Bowe late imo.
