What probably hurts a primed Hector Camacho vs a primed Roberto Duran especially at 135lbs is that "Macho", who was known to gas out after 6 or 7 rounds in a 12-round fight and was known not to take his training regimens seriously sometimes, never engaged himself in a 15-round fight.

Duran was a great 15-round fighter at Lightweight and let's not forget that he's still in most sectors considered to be the best lightweight champion pfp, if not by much. Duran's stamina in 15-round fights at 135 was unquestionable but Camacho's stamina in 12-round fights was just to the degree that he dominated most of the action against an opponent early on and if he doesn't put his opponent away he's so far ahead after the seventh or eight round that all he has to do is coast to victory by flicking and jabbing away the rest of the fight as well as clutching and holding until the final bell. And most specifically in 12-round fights. In a 15-round fight and against someone like a Duran or even an Alexis Arguello & Aarron Pryor I fell that "Macho" as talented and good as he was up until the Jose Luis Ramirez fight would get completely exposed and KO'd.

Camacho would easily take five or six of the fist seven rounds of the fight before Duran would come on mid-way and break Camacho down with constant pressure and force a stoppage around the 12th or 13th round. Duran by knockout!

Note: And for those who don't remember that these two combatants actually engaged in two matchups against each other in 1996 and 2001 keep in mind that it was Roberto who actually dominated most of the action in the first meeting before the fight went to the scorecards and they gave the controversial unanimous decision to Camacho, so that they could set up Camacho as the PPV opponent for the at that time comebacking Sugar Ray Leonard in March, 1997. Camacho of course would go on to stop Ray by a tko in five rounds and then four years later following his brutal one sided decision loss to a young undefeated Oscar DeLahoya would beat Duran more decisively in there 2001 rematch. Duran would retire for good afterwards.

yes he was. It hard to measure how much that Rosario left hook changed Hector. For him to change that much, it must have been a heck of a punch.

    Good post.

When they did actually fight just about everyone that I knew who watched it thought Duran beat Camacho.

Duran probably deserved the nod even though all he had left was a chin and a straight right hand (which Camacho couldn't avoid at all for some reason).

Camacho was fast and hard to hit due to his mobility. But I never thought he was much at slipping punches (something Duran was incredible at) and if you could cut off the ring and force him into exchanges ala Chavez then he was fairly beatable and Duran was great at this.

Seriously Duran was on another level as a fighter and in his prime he'd break down and mentally destroy Camacho who'd be lucky to see the final bell imo.

Wow, ok. Duran roughs up Camacho. Lands lead rights, laughs at Macho's stuff and goes to work to the body, jabs some, and clocks him more. Macho has some flashy moments but he goes up to 140/147 quickly after.

RIP Macho but the only guy beating Duran here is Williams or Whitaker.
