Yes, it was. But until an announcement, one can hope against reason the Mayweather will fight a decent opponent more than once every five years.

He's given us:
Oscar -- good opponent, meh fight.
Smaller guy
Way smaller guy (and pissed on the catchweight)
Old guy
Ortiz -- young and unskilled, but not a horrible opponent
Cotto -- good opponent; great fight.

Looks like he's going to go back to a smaller guy run.

floyd is nicknamed "money" for a reason, and fighting a negative, unpopular devon alexander on the eve of mexican independence day is fiscally counterintuitive when considering on the other side of the coin awaits a suddenly viable, popular mexican american who he can perhaps rake in tens of millions against.

The fight has obviously yet to be finalized, but decisions like this are what give skeptics ammunition for the slighting of floyd's choice of opponents, and more so, his general willingness to face the best available opposition.

I don't believe this fight will happen. Devon Alexander won't bring any fans, and it'll do **** numbers. Somebody like Guerrero would at least pull in the mexican fans. I think Floyd's bullshitting probably but who knows.

My thoughts are basically, aside from doubting this is his next fight, that

1. Among titlists, anybody that dares wear a strap is fair game if they want to call themselves champion. I've no interest in the fight, but titlists should always be encouraged to fight each other for the good of the sport and the spirit of sorting out one man, regardless of sanctioning bodies, etc.

2. Floyd owes no one any kind of fight. It's his career, his life, you don't have to pay for it. He could be fighting 3-15-2 fighters in the middle of Bum****, Egypt. What's it to you?

3. Alexander's a good fighter, excellent athlete-A-class physical attributes with a B-class brain. I had him losing clearly to Matthyse, drawing with Kotelnik and losing clearly to Bradley, all on account of his mind not meeting his physical ability, for the most part. Floyd should find this an easy night but will almost certainly go the distance in a shitfest, but it's not a bad scalp and with the title is a nice little bobble on his record. No more or less.

4. No one should expect anything other than good risk-reward fights with decent name fighters from Floyd right now. And if they love watching him fight, they can count themselves lucky he's continuing on at all and very lucky if they get anything bigger than this. This is a once-retired fighter who's been boxing since he was a child and has enough money to make Solomon blush. He's simply not in the game to prove anything. He's just doing business as an athlete. No reason to get your knickers in a bunch about it.

5. As poor a ring IQ as Alexander seems to have and as godawful a hometown cooking as I think the Matthyse decision was, you've got to give him that he keeps lining up championship caliber opponents, regardless of how inexperienced he was as a pro when he started going for it or what troubles he has with these opponents. He didn't see how difficult it was and scale it back to nobodies. Respect for that. He wants to take the challenges. Now he's going in against a guy that should make him look like a goldfish at a chess seminar. He's got ze balls.

6. The perception that it shouldn't be particularly competitive isn't exactly an easily remedied mental hurdle to get over when it comes to Floyd. He's going to likely be well above anyone up to 147 and while a few 154 men are interesting, he's never really belonged there, and, basically, anyone about the same size or under is not going to hold any real intrigue for the public, because the public mostly senses there's no one there to test him anymore. Since there's no need to hold him to a standard of facing men outside his weight class, let's just accept that anyone in his weight class is just not going to be that interesting. Alexander, Guerrero, none of them.
