But the victory was costly as Martin suffered a career ending detached retina. For the life of me I can't think of another boxer who went out on what was definitively the best win of his career. I think Sanchez is the best candidate, since I think that Nelson, even a green Nelson, is a better fighter than Wilfredo Gomez. That being said, the Nelson win lacked the amazing virtuosity Sanchez displayed against Gomez. Marciano is another possibility, but I favor his wins over Walcott and Charles over the win against Moore. Juan Manuel Marquez had a chance to join Martin if he'd retired after the fourth fight with Manny.
Marcel over Arguello - though it wouldn't have been apparent that this was Marcel's greatest win until some time later. Maybe Carbajal over Arce?

Jimmy McLarnin retired after back to back wins over Tony Canzoneri and Lou Ambers. Not a bad full stop to a career at all.
Calzaghe-Jones? Please. Joe's wins over Kessler and Lacy were both more impressive. Hell, knocking out Byron Mitchell in two rounds was more impressive than getting dropped by an acient Roy Jones.

Good one. Like Martin, I believe Padilla's career also ended due to injury - in a sparring session with Mosley IIRC.
Perhaps Monzon could be a candidate for this? - retired after arguably the two biggest wins of his career, vs. Valdez.
I think Monzon is an excellent and an obvious choice. I can't believe I overlooked him, although his title grab against Benvenuiti and kayo of Griffith are both outstanding as well.
