Promoters are too slow to make meaningful heavyweight fights

f you go through the BoxRec top 25 or top 50 ratings at heavyweight, you'll find most of the heavyweights are not currently scheduled. And most of those who are scheduled are fighting journeymen.

The biggest problem in the heavyweight division is fighters' inactivity and a lack of meaningful fights between contenders.

There are three good ones coming up (Glazkov vs. Scott, Price vs. Thompson and Abdusalamov vs. Bisbal) but not much else.

Kubrat Pulev was supposed to fight Tomasz Adamek but they haven't even started negotiations yet, according to Dan Rafael. Mike Perez has seemed to disappear. Robert Helenius was supposed to be fighting Michael Sprott on March 2, but that's been delayed and may not happen at all. Denis Boytsov and Odlanier Solis have promotional problems that are ruining their careers. Sam Peter is in limbo. Ruslan Chagaev doesn't seem to want to fight anymore. David Haye refuses to fight anyone not named Vitali Klitschko, but it looks like Vitali is retiring. Luis Ortiz has been wasting his prime fighting low-level opposition, as have Joe Hanks, Carlos Takam and Andrzej Wawrzyk.

The division badly needs the promoters and managers to make some meaningful matchups.

The fight is still in negotiations and hasn't been signed yet.

There's also talks of a Ortiz-Chagaev interim title bout. But it doesn't look like that will happen until Haye/Klitschko/Povetkin get their plans squared away. I still suspect that if Haye can't get the Vitali fight he'll try to get the WBA Regular title. That would put Haye in ideal position to take a few fights on his own terms and then have mandatory status to challenge Wladimir.

Most guys seem too willing to take the easy road at heavyweight by stringing a bunch of soft wins and waiting their turn at the cash register

Build up a padded resume and hope to earn a fat check before the glass gets shattered, ever the way.

It's the promoters/managers doing what you say.

The fighters themselves are generally willing to take on bigger challenges.

This is the only reason why Klitschko can make these voluntaries everyone fusses about. The best guys aren't getting ushered into mandatory positions at all. Because the fights aren't happening fast enough. Yeah, Pulev/Adamek should have been made immediately following Adamek's lo-er-the fight with Cunningham, no matter how you view the decision. They started it with a good eliminator of Adamek/Solis and Pulev/Ustinov, though Pulev got the easy one for the first part. That was how long ago? Then Chambers/Thompson was a good eliminator, and the favourite ended up out of it. :-(

    This, almost always.

It amazes me how good fighters get constantly crapped on around here, for who they fight or don' fight. The only fighters who actually have a say in opponent choice are the champs: K2, Floyd & Pac, etc.

There are a lot of interesting matchups that could be made at heavyweight.

    Wilder-Fury
    Boytsov-Adamek
    Abdusalamov-Mitchell
    Price-Helenius
    Haye-Pulev
