Just out of curiosity. I have seen on ESB more then once people picking Monzon to take out a prime Roy Jones JR.

Here are a couple clips from both fighters. Please enlighten me on what I am missing here:think

    Monzon here

    [YT]UOQSmYyBN5A[/YT]

    Roy here

    [YT]ffpE9KN9OF8[/YT]

    Monzon again

    [YT]gXivXNvb780[/YT]

    Jones highlight against Toney

    [YT]GkAdniPgu6o[/YT]

Now watch Roy Jones. An absolutely brilliant fighter, superb defense, blistering offense, unreal power. He has every trick in the book, every feint, every punch. Highly unorthadox and extremely hard to predict.

    How exactly does Monzon win?

Here is my analysis of Monzon. Very flat footed. Strong puncher, particularly his jab. Limited defensively (massive understatement). Very strong in close. Slow hands. Doesn't use a lot of angles. Very striaght forward technically, doesn't use a lot of feints, doesn't change his speed up much, basically what you see is what you get. Decent fighter, great chin and heart yes. Very good at adapting the range on his punches, particularly against guys who try to swarm in on him... But how the hell does he beat Roy Jones?

Please watch the clips, and then explain it to me. If you think Roy Jones is one extreme, please explain how he would beat Hopkins then? or Calzaghe? or Kessler?

    Much appreciated.

He would beat Jones at 160. Jones was talented and great toe-to-toe but lacked top level experience at 160. That would be his downfall.

Monzon vs. Hopkins would be a very close fight, I can't pick the winner. Since Monzon beat much better competition at 160 I pick him.

Monzon vs. Calzaghe: We don't know how Monzon would do at Super Middleweight.

Its 8 pound difference, just try to use a little imagination... its not to hard.

Jones in his FIRST fight at 168 went up to DOMINATE James Toney. Obviously he didn't have big fight experience then either.... So how did he win that one?

Please break down for me exactly how Monzon would beat these guys after watching the clip.

I know popular opinion here on ESB is to go with the older fighter... But i want people to ACTUALLY analyze whats going on, and then break it down.

    Cheers.

First of all how am I suppose to concentrate on that first Monzon clip when Jessica clearly wants to fk me.

Secondly, there's no way im penalizing a clearly superior fighter in Jones due to the lack of quality opponents he faced at 160.

You named most of them, but Roy had so many advantages in this match up which is blatantly obvious when comparing the footage.

Footwork movement and angle shots stand out as the key for Jones but for SHEER speed with power, hows Monzons sloppy defence going to cope??

Monzon cant overpower/overwhelm the naturally bigger Jones, I see Monzon missing on the counter and getting his slow body shots consistantly blocked.

I know it sounds like i give Monzon no credit at all, he was a warrior in his era and his shits on Roy's resume, but for mine, Jones to much agility, to evasive, to strong, to skillful, to good H2H

Anyway did I mention anything you didn't already...should have just said I agree haha To tired to anaylise other two, i'll think about it

Monzon had a good jab, and a great, sneaky left hook. He was also a pretty accurate puncher who used both hand and was also effectice inside. He fought so many different styles of fighters and was very adaptable. He was also tough and dirty.
I think the fact that he was such a tough fighter would make RJJ very uncomfortable. I respect RJJ's talents, but Monzon is a little too tough for him.

Monson was tough but he lacked the speed to keep up with a relentless attack from Jones

Monzon was flat footed and slow. Unless RJJ decides to fight CM on the inside, I see a wide UD for RJJ. Too fast, too mobile.

Standing in front of Monzon and trying to trade would probably get you KOed. The only fighters on the list that would do that is Calzaghe and Kessler.

I think he beats Hops and loses to Roy at MW. He was better than Hops ever was at MW as was Roy and it wasnt Roy's best weight.

JC and Kessler are both big SMW's from the day before weight in era - much bigger guys than Monzon. Monzon would come in for a fight a little over 160, whereas modern SMW's will be 175 plus come fight night. Pound for pound Monzon would be favourite vs MK, but JC and MK would just be too big for him in the real world. P4P I think JC would UD him.

Nope its quite a bit more than that. Monzon = 160 on day of fight. Modern SMW = 168 the day before. I would expect more like a 15lb difference.

Monzon is very underrated in this forum, he didnt have flashy skills like Roy, but he had one skill that beat all the skill that roy has, he adapt to every fighter and made him fight his fight.he had pinpoint accuracy and great timing and we all know that the main weapon to kill speed is timing and accuracy, monzon had it.Also, he had a lot of power behind his jab and straight right, plus roy has a shaky chin.Monzon wins IMO
