Eddie Hearn is speaking for every promoter right now. Golovkin is the most avoided fighter in the game. People **** on GGG for his poor opponents but just about every top middleweight has been offered a fight with Golovkin and none of them want it.

 

Because everyone knows he's a seriously powerful fighter, his power and killer instinct are awesome. Sturm made every excuse in the book not to fight him. Geale apparently isn't interested either and neither is Sergio Martinez. Chavez's are scared too, they'd probably let Jr face a pack of lions before they ever let him fight GGG. They all don't want to risk it because he's so dangerous. I reckon he's going to get frustrated and move up to SM very soon.

 

I don't see why there isn't a call from Boxing fans flr Sergio Martinez to fight GGG? Who has the guy faced since Pavlik? Opponent for Opponent since that fight Floyd Mayweather has faced 100x better fighters and gets ripped to pieces. Imagine if Mayweather had faced european level fighters and his next opponent was Brian Rose!

 

Golovkin was only just sorting out legal issues to fight in the US while Martinez was heading into the Macklin/Barker fights. Martinez then got the fight against the draw in the division, Chavez Jr, while GGG was only just getting on HBO.

Since then Martinez has been injured, is taking a tune-up (reasonably so considering the surgery he had on his leg), and is then expected to rematch Chavez Jr.

It would be somewhat unfair to criticise him for not facing Golovkin during this time. I'd also like to see Golovkin beat a genuine opponent at the weight - why not go in against Soliman now he's coming off a win over Sturm? He's a road warrior, and will gladly accept that fight to get on HBO.

You can make excuses for Mayweather as well. Truth is Ortiz & Cotto are far better opponents than Macklin/Barker & Chavez Jnr.

 

Cotto, yes, Ortiz, no. Ortiz is gash. Mayweather is a bona-fide star and he can easily make any fight he wants. He doesn't need to fight weak sisters like Ortiz, Alexander or Guerrero.

 

I don't think too many people are criticising SM at the moment but they will eventually. It should start when he rematches Chavez Jr, a fight that only makes financial sense. (which is of course the most important sense in boxing)

As for Golovkin facing a genuine opponent at the weight? What about a genuine opponents facing him? I seriously doubt he's going to get a chance to face any of the top guys. I also seem to recall Dibella saying (and I paraphrase heavily here) that GG hasn't proven himself and brings no money to the table.
My belief is that Golovkin is ****ed. That HBO is televising some of his fights is a glimmer of hope but no more than that, Hence he's fighting that Ishida bloke
who's not world class and a LM.

 

At the moment, Golovkin presents far too much risk for too little reward. He'll get the big fights he wants, but only when he brings enough money to the table. I don't mind fighters avoiding him for that reason because if we're honest, it's what we'd do in the same situation. I like GGG though so hopefully he can raise his profile and get one of those big fights.

My post was just in reply to Rob asking why Martinez gets a pass and Mayweather doesn't. Your post is 100% common sense. Sergio is near 40! He has to max out while he can.

Personally, I don't. But there's a subset of fans who think getting mashed for 11.7 rounds and having 60 seconds of success is grounds for a competitive rematch.

I don't begrudge Sergio a pay day, but it would be nice if there was a more interesting, competitive fight for him to take and make his coin.

 

That's the problem though. If he can't get the big fights it's tough to raise his profile.
I personally do mind that fighters avoid him, but I can't blame them.

He is gonna get ripped for fighting Guererro/Alexander after a year layoff and a fee months in prison, but Martinez can fight Martin Murray? Ortiz is gash yea but he is better than Macklin/Barker/Murray.

What Hearn said in his interview, DiBella aslso said last week. His team are duckig a fight with Golovkin because be brings nothing to the table....thats the same thing fighters said about Martinez in 2010.

 

But Martinez CAN'T be held to the same standard. He doesn't go around saying he's the greatest fighter of all time.

 

I dont really see how that comes into it. Fighters say allot of things. Martinez says he wants to become a hall of famer fighter.

Martinez is the No.1 fighter in his division and he isnt fighting the best fighters. Infact he is fighting average fighters.

When Hatton had 50,000 at the Man City stadium to watch his home coming vs Lazcano he was accuses of ripping fans off. Martinez is doing the same thing.
