Which finish do you consider better? Robinson-Turpin II or Leonard-Hearns I?? Robinson unleashed a brutal offensive attack after suffering a what could have been a fight ending cut above the eye, forcing a stoppage in the 10th round. Leonard, behind on the cards, switched roles with Hearns and became the deadly puncher, putting Hearns away in the 14th. Which was better? Its splitting hairs. I guess maybe Robinson`s stoppage by a shade. It took alot more punishment to stop Turpin. Also the fact that Randy Turpin was a natural middleweight.
immediately after the fight when turpin went to congratulate robinson in the time honoured amateur custom the lickers cornermen all tried physically stopping him thinking that he wanted to continue fighting. they couldnt stop him !!! either turpin was incredibly strong or not as hurt as goldstien thought
I didn't think Goldstein had much choice, Randy looked really hurt and his actions right after the stoppage suprises anyone who see them. I give it by a shade to Robinson, dropping Randy took one heck of a punch and Ray had been looking for it over 25 rounds at that point (both bouts). The finish at least matches Leonards barrage against Hearns on the ropes.
Considering that the end of Robinson/Turpin II came in the 10th of 15 rounds, and that Robinson was leading at the time, and that the end of Leonard/Hearns I came with just a round left, and with Hearns comfortably a head on points. I think the finish of Leonard/Hearns is better.
Both fights were great dramatic all time finishes however given that we're in the year 2013 and the 13th round is what started the great climatic finish in the first fight between Sugar Ray Leonard & Tommy Hearns and given that I'm always partial to Sugar Ray Leonard when it comes to the all-time great calls I'm going with the great finish of Leonard-HearnsI. And no I'm not taking anything away the dramatic 51' finish of Sugar Ray Robinson (whom I acknowledge as the greatest PFP of all-time head and shoulders above all still) and Randy Turpin, a fight that was held at the legendary Polo Grounds in NYC on CCT and had an all-star cast of guests live at the fight just to see Sugar Ray Robinson overcome a deep cut on the left eye lid and with the referee threatning to stop it the round before when Ray unleashed what I believe was a 70 punch barrage of mean vicious combos that made Turpin wilt into tko submission in the 11th round.
Leonard-Hearns stoppage wins hands down IMHO. Just look at the circumstances of each fight, Hearn's clearly ahead on points against a battered and bruised Leonard, who was forced to fight a style which would suit Hearn's. The stoppage really was something, and one of the finest pieces of finishing you will ever see against a quality fighter. SRR's stoppage of Turpin was great to, but he was well ahead on the cards and was dominating the fight. He had a far easier time in forcing the stoppage.
Robinson was ahead but he also had a severe cut over his eye. There was a sense of urgency to get the stoppage because it was a possible the bout couldve been stopped a round or two later.
