List the famous gyms over the years

This is my recollection of Stillmans, g:

it was 15 cents when I first went in in '45. From the moment the doors were opened the galleries were packed.

The sparring in SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME was done at Stillmans, but all the rest was done on sound stages.

 

5th Street Gym

 

Wild Card started to enter that status..especially with its open door policy...but not sure if that status is going to last with Pac being put back on the level of a mere mortal.

 

You're right about Wild Card, J. It did take on a modern day Stillmans persona, with all the great fighters training there, 'n easy access.

Haven't been there in a long time; since it became a police state when Pac was training.

Stillman's gym. The sound of thudding, the smell of sweat and liniment, the idea of rubbing elbows with celebrities of the day, and seeing the greatest fighters of a very tough era training in 2 rings a few feet from you was to me heaven on earth...

Learning how to feint from Willie Pep, how to lengthen my jab from Billy Conn; how to draw a right hand, roll with it and come back over the top from Johnny Bratton, and countless words of encouragement from Joe Louis, Tony Janiro, Bo Bo Olson and Gil Turner are treasured memories

 

T,the question is who didn't I see at Stillmans ? I would go to Stillman's gym most every Sat, and some weekdays, quite often for many,many years. The only two major fighters I recall NOT seeing at Stillman's was Joe Louis and Ezzard Charles...I missed a few years when in the Navy, but sure made up for it when discharged...Aside from watching the great fighters I would rub elbows with famous celebrities as Bob Hope, Rochester,and many ex fighters as Kid Norfolk, Harry Wills, Ben Jeby,Eddie Eagan etc.
And I vividly recall such great trainers as Ray Arcel, Whitey Bimstein,
Freddy Brown, Charley Goldman, Chickie Ferrera instructing their fighters...
I was fortunate i had a dad who saw Greb, Walker, Benny Leonard, Tunney,
Jack Delaney, Paul Berlenbach, Johnny Dundee ,from the 1920s, and instilled in me a love of boxing that has never left me...cheers...

 

Wow i can't even imagine meeting those kind of guys from that era would be amazing to see them.
