Opinions? Does fist size affect boxing power or the effects of a punch?

I think yes, but not sure of the correlation.

Bigger fists means bigger bones meaning you can punch harder without breaking your hand.

It doesn't affect punching power, just how hard you can bang without breaking some bones.

Bigger fist = heavier/bigger bones = naturally stronger

The variation between boxers in the same weight class is only a couple of inches - even less the lower the weight class... doesn't really make much of a difference and other factors are more important when it comes to power.

Liston's long arms and big fists probaly helped him alot... bit of a plodder.

Strong hands (grip) & wrists ftw.

If only you knew what you were talking about.

Punching power comes from mass of the projectile (the fist & glove) X speed, plus support (the legs & overall posture.)

A bigger fist means a heavier projectile.

The end.

A heavier projectile needs more energy to achieve the same speed as a lighter projectile.
So what goes in mass goes out of speed.

If a fighter can produce 2000J of energy it will still be 2000J of energy wether the mass inside the punch is 2 or 200 kgs.
E=1/2m(v^2)
Even if you were right the energy difference would be too small to matter much.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebral_Concussion

The brain is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid which protects it from light trauma. More severe impacts, or the forces associated with rapid acceleration, may not be absorbed by this cushion.[14] Concussion may be caused by impact forces, in which the head strikes or is struck by something, or impulsive forces, in which the head moves without itself being subject to blunt trauma (for example, when the chest hits something and the head snaps forward).[5]

Forces may cause linear, rotational, or angular movement of the brain, or a combination of them.[5] In rotational movement, the head turns around its center of gravity, and in angular movement it turns on an axis not through its center of gravity.[5] The amount of rotational force is thought to be the major component in concussion[44] and its severity.[8] Studies with athletes have shown that the amount of force and the location of the impact are not necessarily correlated with the severity of the concussion or its symptoms, and have called into question the threshold for concussion previously thought to exist at around 70–75g.[45][46]

You need g-forces to produce a KO.(The speed at which your head accelerates in this case, because of the slowness of your brain, when your head moves very fast in a very short amount of time your brain gets smashed to the skull)

When you have bigger fists there isn't an increase of energy, so the power behind your punch remains the same.
1/2m(v^2), there isn't any difference in g-forces when you get hit by a small or big fist (mass difference isn't big enough for that in this case)

Therefore bigger fists don't result in more punching power.
