Why does "creating an image" in boxing mean acting like a twat?

At the end interview, when not addressing the crowd, Broner actually came across as an alright, respectful bloke.

But yeah, people say boxers should create an image and such... but why does that seem to translate into acting like a *****? Khan (although I think that's less acting a ***** and more the fact he is a *****), Ward, Mayweather, Broner, Prince Naseem etc.

The point behing creating an image is too appeal to yanks. Most of them are twats who love gobshites hence the behaviour of the fighters you named. It is generally yank boxers who act like tha, europeans/mexicans/puerto ricans are generally ok.

Blatantly using his head against Kessler does. Likewise using the nickname "Son Of God". He isn't as bad as some though admittedly. In fact, I'm shocked he hasn't started acting like the Broner's and Mayweather's of this world yet.

To be fair I always thought Ward seemed pretty sound, but hes been getting worse talking shite recently, although I still think hes ok and would defo not group him with the other guys that were mentioned.

    Bitter?

Not really, I just don't like seeing nice, talented guys like Kessler getting their eyes ****ed up and their career shortened thanks to headbutts from dirty, cheating yanks.

There's no doubt Ward would have won. I admit, he was a good step above Kessler. So why use the head?

So **** of you ignorant yank twat.

Because it's easier to create an image that sells by being a twat. Very few fighters have genuine charisma. Johnny Tapia had it. Very few fighters are talented and exciting enough to be able to become superstars just based on what they do in the ring. Pacquiao is an example. Can you imagine if Floyd Mayweather was a nice guy? He would still sell, but not as much. Look at Andre Ward. Very good fighter but the nice, God fearing family man image? It's pretty boring. Tapia was a nice guy too, but he had personality, unlike Ward. If Floyd and Broner were nice guys like Ward, firstly there wouldn't be the haters who want to see them lose, and there wouldn't be the swag generation-those clown kids who mistake hair brushing for personality. Everything about Broner, the way he talks, the way he dresses, is considered "cool" by kids these days. Personally, I think he looks like a jackass, but it generates interest either way. People usually either love him or hate him. I'm in the middle. The guy has the personality of a barbie doll, but there is a lot to admire. The guy is a winner and makes no apologies for having supreme confidence. Plenty of nice guys in boxing who are down to earth but have boring personalities. Shrugging their shoulders through interviews, no energy in their voices, coming out with nothing but cliches. Even Oscar DLH was boring and seemed a bit fake. He's good looking though, and had a great story. Most fighters don't have that. Being a nice guy that sells it just very difficult.

It shows you just how different Americans are to brits. They will look at a lot of our fighters and be bored to tears, and brits will look at their fighters and be turned off because they're brash and loud. The fake nice guy act IMO is even worse than acting like a twat. I've don't mind Hatton but the way he acted after his last fight was poor. Didn't mention Senchenko once, and made it all about him. Ricky Hatton this and Ricky Hatton that. Then there's constantly reminding everyone what a nice down to earth man of the people he is. How is this any less arrogant than Khan/Mayweather talking about himself in the third person?

Attention-seeking extroverts always attract more media coverage, especially if they have the skills to back it up.

Never underestimate the value of novelty & the impact that can have on a fighters earnings. Broner might not be especially bright or funny or charismatic but he's going to earn a fortune.

now I'm not trying to brag or say I told you so but before this fight this is what I said

Okay I'm bragging. :yep He done came across alright after the fight did Broner. Showed respect to Reese. People were wishing for Rees to break his jaw, but it was just a bit of fun from Broner, nothing malicious or spiteful. Like I said, brits and Americans are very different people.

What are you on about? Of course broner is actually a twat in real life. You have to be a twat to think being a twat is the way forward. Could you imagine someone who clearly isn't a twat, someone respectable with dignity like, I dunno, katsidis or wladimir klitschko rapping their way down the ring dancing like a ******ed jungle animal? No, because they aren't dickheads and know how to act.
Every time one of these clowns come on the scene people are like "oh he's cool IRL". No. Floyd mayweather is a ****. Naz is a ****. Eubank is a ****. Broner is a ****. End of. Ali used wit, intelligence and charisma to build a character, broner can't string a sentence together.

Broner reminds me a lot of Prince Naseem Hamed. He acts a nob and says ridiculous things that makes the average person think he's a complete douche but you should be able to see that it's all an act. The antics are tongue-in-cheek, he's just messing around because he knows it'll get attention.

Broner during the Sky interview came across as very respectful and made me honestly think "he's not such a bad guy after all". Put his arm around Rees and complimented him, nice touch of class that he didn't have to do. During the HBO interview when all the Americans were watching he went back into his bad guy persona and the yank crowd and audience lapped it up. When the camera's were off he starting acting normal, hugged his family and thanked everybody.

Some of the stuff is over the top and cringey of course but at the end of the day if it gets people talking and interested then it's good for the sport.

he hijacked Rees interview, and despite saying Rees was tough he was still being disrespectful,Gary Lockett wanted to smack him you could tell, Adam Smith all of a sudden forgot Rees was there.

but I digress, you are right, it is an act, because he's not very good at it, he rehearses a few lines, then once they are used up he can't think of anything on the fly, I mean, a steak thats been cooked too long?

Broners problem is he tries wayyyyy too hard.

to answer the original question, why does creating an image mean acting like a twat, as Eric Bischoff said, and titled his autobiography, "Controversy creates cash"
