Is it safe to say Wladimir got the worst chin of the top 10 heavyweights?

Well, he couldn't really. He got buzzed a lot and dropped by not especially monstrous blows. What he did possess was excellent recovery ability, sort of like a heavyweight Marquez.

Physically though, his chin was just not very good.

The only type of evidence that would suport it, would be him getting stopped without taking a careers worth of punishment.

Joe Louis was arguably one of the harder top 10 heavyweights to stop.

Lennox was one of the harder top ten heavyweights to stop. Only two men did it.

The problem is the way they did it.

Even so, I would have to agree that his durability is sold short.

By catching him flush on the jaw with full body power shots?

The punch Rahman landed on Lewis was one of the hardest single shots ever thrown, very reminiscent of Shavers vs Holmes.

    No question.

It was a good shot, and not one that could be repeated easialy, but it was still a single shot.

The botom line is, that Lewis's chin was not bad enough to bail you out, if you were a big puncher with not much else.

I don't see why that matters when the shot was such a huge one and landed so perfectly. If a shot puts your lights out it puts your lights out. No real reflection on your durability unless it happens time and again against fighters not known for their one punch prowess.

I was talking about chin, not durability. But now you mention durability, I can think of many heavies who would take those Schmeling right hands over the top better without being stopped...

The fact is that Louis was dropped more than any heavyweights champion, second only to Floyd Patterson. Only Floyd was dropped more.

I'd say that's pretty good evidence.

    1. Not near a top 10 HW all time. If it were all tiem HW cowards then he would top the list mind you.

    2. Yes if he were compared to the top 10 HW's then his chin is definitely the worst. He is lucky he only had to fight bums. Even then a couple still gave him his beans.

Shannon Briggs vs Vitali Klitschko springs to mind.

Wlad got up from almost every knockdown as well, and everyone knows what his chin rep is like. Louis got hurt and dropped by, on average, but much lighter and less regarded punchers than Wlad, including a man who could have comfortably made super middleweight on the night. No one's saying he was easy to stop, but when you're getting hurt like that then it has to call into question your ability to take a shot.
