It has beens 3 years ESB classic did our weight divisions and I am trying to redo some/all of my listings and discovered I would change some of them over the last 5 years: 01 Manuel Ortiz 02 Eder Jofre 03 Panama Al Brown 04 Fighting Harada 05 Joltin'Jeff Chandler (I already know you don't like this one!) 06 Rueben Olivares 07 George Dixon 08 Terry McGovern 09 Pete Herman 10 Sixto Escobar 11 Joe Lynch 12 Carlos zarate 13 Jimmy Carruthers 14 Vic Toweel 15 Lionel Rose 16 Alphonso Zamora 17 Orlando Canizales 18 Lupe Pintor 19 chucho Castillo 20 Albert Davilla Here is my old list Besides Chandler who needs to be higher/lower or added/removed and why????
I like the names. How do you feel about Bud Taylor? http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=458896 I don't see much difference between his résumé and your 11+ group.
Looks good. Chandler is obviously too high, but I know you don´t care lol... I would put Lora at least between the 18-20.
Funny that you mention him....I plead a lack of information! I almost placed him in the 11-20 range, but felt that I would have done so based upon others rankings of him...He is one of a few bantams that I need to learn more about this year. Along w/ Kid Williams and Jimmy Barry I need to get a beter knowledge of so my ratings are not so incomplete.
I will have to reconsider Lora....since he is one of my favorites I really like the idea of adding him....I can certainly see him as top 25-30 if I can't squeeze him in!
Do any guys like: Lujan, Austin, McCullough, Fenech, Rudkin, Pedroza, Rafa, Hasegawa have a case... Or educate me on kid Williams, Jim Barry, Bud Taylor, Monte Attell, Johny Coulon, Eddie Cannonball Martin, Louis Salica
Not a bad list at all, and as I commented in your Zarate/Chandler thread, there is a logical case for having Chandler rated very highly (though 6 or 7 might be more appropriate). My only real criticism of your top 10 is your underrating of Olivares. I would only rate Ruben behind Al Brown and Jofre. Also, I think Rafa Marquez is unquestionably top 20 material. And his counterpart Verapol Sahaprom ought to be top 20 as well. I think both belong there more than Orlando Canizales, who, while excellent, racked up his 16 defenses against a pretty weak crew. They also belong higher than Zamora, Davila, and maybe Pintor too. Marquez vs Pintor would have been a hell of a scrap though!
Jim Barry should definitely be on the list. But he is probably the hardest all time great to find information on. His name just isnt conducive to newspaper searches and there were too many Jim Barrys or Jim Jam Barry or other variations written about to get many search results for the great Jimmy Barry.
I would be open to this.....but help me understand it a little better (or anyone else that wants to chime in!) if you would. I am aware of Oliveres' 51-0-1 record that propeled him to a title shot....but I only see a 4 year window between 69-73 where he was a top ranked/champion Bantam, before moving up in weight. Is this enough to off set the longer periods of Jofre/Ortiz/Brown? And why don't most people consider Ortiz among the top 2, I usually see in the 3-5 range, but the amount of ranked opposition he fought (over 50) is just astounding...even more so when compared to Olivares IMHO. What is it that sets Rueben apart as top 3 or even a lock for top 5...I am not disagreeing, I am open to learning more, which is why I posted this in the first place. I don't want to rank him top 3 because everyone else does...but if everyone else has a merited case I want to hear it...
No way is Ortiz above Jofre. Everyone knows I love Carruthers and Zamora but they're way too high, as is Toweel, he beat a shot Ortiz then got sledgehammered by Carruthers. Veeraphol>Toweel Macias and Becerra are better than those two IMO. I like Dixon and McGovern on the list, even if really placing them is feasible. Obviously Chandler is actually a 16-20 type at best. I am still boring in the regard that I have Jofre the clear no.1 bantamweight. I'll take Olivares as no.2. It's the way he demolished so many good fighters, and while Herrera did have his number Olivares posted a 2-1 against one of the best fighters of the era in 'Chucho' Castillo, so what with beating Rudkin, Rose, Sakurai so definitively and whatnot, I'm happy to have him that high.
I could probably go either way on this one, and wouldn't disagree with Jofre ahead....I think I had a similar thought in reverse about 3 years ago...My paperwork (Yes, I am a nerd) is at the office w/ my books, so I may change my stance when I have that in front of me....But it seems that Jofre had a 5 year period of dominance (being considered the best bantam in the world) while Ortiz's seems to be about 9....Jofre was likely the more consistant of the two....Ortiz also seemed to astound me with the number of top 10 opponents he faced (54 if memory serves) whil jofre was more in the 20???? range....Again Jofre had the higher win percentage and agains seemed to be more consistant. Ortiz's level of comp was probably the deciding factor? But I could be swayed if you make a case for Jofre!
