Well if you get done looking at him and/or comparing him to Zarate I would greatly appreciate it if you would revisit this thread when that happens....You are among quite a few of the posters on here whom I highly respect and would greatly welcome your analysis.
From what I can see, Jeff is the more polished, and athletic some might think this would end in Carlos' favor as it did vs Zamora but Zamora was more the straight ahead type. Chandler, trained here in the US was more versatile & smarter I think Carlos is too stiff, too straight up, and just isnt fast enough. Probably would have problems connecting Realistically, you know Jeff is going to beat him to the punch consistently to rack up a sizable lead (somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-5) I also favor Olivares in a head to head
Upon scanning the boxing register they seem to give a lot of credit to ring, ring magazing and record book + encyclopedia...amongst other sources...My guess is that they relied heavily on rings rankings....But I did not search in depth to confirm that so don't quote me! Carlos Zarate vs Champions and top 10 ranked opposition: Wins: Rudolfo Martinez (Champ), Paul Ferreri (Ranked), Alfonso Zamora (Champ), Albert Davila (Ranked) losses: Wilfredo Gomez (Champ), Lupe Pintor (Ranked), Jeff Fenech (Champ), Daniel Zaragoza (Ranked) record against ranked opposition: 4-4 Jeff Chandler vs Champions and top 10 ranked opposition: Wins: Javier Flores (Ranked), Juan Solis X's 2(Champ/Ranked), Jorge Lujan (Ranked), Ejiro Murata X's 2 (Ranked), Johnny "Dancin Machine" Carter (Ranked), Gaby Canizales (Ranked), Oscar Muniz (Ranked) Losses: Oscar Muniz (Ranked), Richie Sandoval (Ranked) Draw: Ejiro Murata record: 9-2-1 If you want to give the Pintor fight to Zarate (I need to rewatch/rescore it) and make him 5-3....well then turnabout is fair play as Chandler clearly beat Murata in Japan but came away w/ a draw so chalk him up at 10-2... I would say that Zarate's 2 best wins Davila/Zamora are better than anything on Chandler's although Canizales might be comprable, but Chandler clearly has more depth by double the ammount. I just don't see what Zarate has done to have such a consensus appeal....most guys in other weight division get scrutinized much more harshly than him and again I don't understand why no one calls this???
Here is a link to the interview where Jeff refers to Gomez...I was wrong though it was prior to the solis fight and not the muniz one. http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/0001-hanley.html
I'm as big a Chandler fan as anybody (with the exception of you ;-) ). It's an oddity that I've seen more than a few highly knowledgable posters state that they need to brush up on Chandler. You make a good argument and personally I'd rate them in the same range. I do think it's a bit unfair to hold the Fenech, Zaragoza fights against Zarate due to the layoff and the fact he was clearly past best. Conversely, I don't put much stock in Richie Sandoval beating the shell of Chandler. Despite that, Chandler's resume certainly stands up against Zarate. Zarate did have a bigger punch and had a bit of an Arguello quality about him. He's certainly more aesthetically pleasing than Chandler. And maybe that's all that separates them. I have a hard time making a pick between them head to head. I could see Chandler spoiling a bit and getting a decision. I could see Zarate stopping him late. Tough call in my opinion. Very close.
You must look beyond mere numbers. Search your heart you know Zarate ranks higher. Take a victory over a guy like Fernando Cabanela. Mediocre record right. But he had beat Rolando Navarrate, Sukhothai, Chionoi, and Chartvanchai. And he had gone the distance with Borkhorsor, Ohba, Octavio Gomez, Soo Hwan-Hong, and Ruben Olivares. It took Zarate three rounds to get rid of him. Zarates record is full of guys like that, Jimenez, Orlando Amores. God tough competent guys. Now throw in the ranked guys (and you neglected that Rodolfo Martinez is better than anybody Chandler best) and remember that with a better set of judges st the time of his retirement Zarate could have been 50-1 and you get a sense of his worth.
Oh I absolutely agree about not holding the Fenech/Zaragoza loses against him as that would be akin to Camacho/SRL or Tyson/McBride just about irrelevant....but without them he only has 6 fights against ranked opposition and to me that seems almost worse. I like Zarate but I see people rate him in the 3-5 range....I probably wouldn't argue 8+ dependent upon who he is rated over.
Also Zarate is from Mexico city the new York of Mexico. In the Order of Cities Philadelphia> Pittsburgh>>>> New York. So there's that...
Look what happens when you bring their best & brightest over here against our best & brightest: Chavez v Taylor, Chavez v Whitaker suddenly they dont look so hot
Yeah well the 118lb Sanchez getting knocked about by journeymen would've struggled to see 5 rounds with Zarate. So **** off.
