You'd favor Jones over anyone at 175? Including Bob Foster? Ezzard Charles? Michael Spinks? Floyd Patterson?
Skill/talent wise I beleve that Jones is at least as good as any of the boxers you mentioned at 175. I just made a post about why I tend to take more modern boxers in head to head match ups. It's kind of a rant, but in an atempt to sum it up the modern boxer has the chance to see through film or video the boxers and their trainers that came before them. I'm sure that if we could realy have fanasty fights than the boxer from the (greater) past would be able to view film of his more modern oponent in his training but the more modern boxer could have been taught the lesons learned from the past asumeing that he has a good trainer. In other wards Jones would also enjoy not only having his own experance but he also benefits from the experance of others. I'm not saying that this experance alone gives Jones the advantage but his abilities combined with this experance gives him the advantage.
Guys like Spinks and Foster had those same advantages. Style-wise, Foster's huge reach, height, and immense power would be hell for Jones, especially with his timing.
I think Moorer was quite overrated at LHW to be honest. He had certain performances where he looked great, others where he looked very vulnerable to much lesser fighters than Jones(Allen, Stewart, Stonewalker) and never proved himself against a top opponent. In fact he avoided Hill and Williams pretty obviously. If you've not seen the fights in parentheses I mentioned, do so. I thought Moorer looked great at times as well, but sound boxers gave him real trouble, and Jones was much more versatile than a guy like Stewart obviously. The big punch could land for Moorer, but I don't see him as versatile enough to give Jones any significant troubles.
I gleaned through a copy of the current Fist magazine (available in Australia) and in it trainer Johnny Lewis (who trained Fenech, Tszyu, Virgil Hill, etc...) was asked who was the best fighter he had ever seen and the answers were Ray Robinson and Carlos Monzon. He didn't give reasons but, they were his answers.
Monzon prime was at 160lbs at this weight he would beat all of them there is no telling how well he would do at 168lbs were Calzaghe, Kessler and Jones had there prime. When Monzon fought there was no 168lbs weight class and moving up to 175lbs meant fighting Foster.
Saying that i favor one boxer over an other dose not nesscarly mean that a win is certan. Upsets happen all the time. Jones was not invincible. Montell Griffin gave him problems and was up on one score card and down 2 rounds one score card and down 1 round on the other. Also he was beten by Antonio Tarver twice and Glen Johnson. I beleve that Jnes was past his prime when he lost to Tarver and Johnson but even at the level he was/is at he should have beaten them. A victory for a prime Roy Jones Jr. is not certan but I would still favor him over anyone else 160-175.
Monzon over Jones late round KO, even though Jones wins almost all the rds. Monzon wears him down with body shots, and stops him. Monzon over Hopkins, UD boring fight Monzon chasing all the way. Monzon over Calzaghe, Late rd KO, the light punches from Calzaghe can't not hold off Monzon. Monzon knocks out a completely befuddled Kessler mid way. Monzon was a very very rough guy on the inside. A different level of roughness than these guys are used too. He always had made my list of top five 160's
Jones was world class at 60, maybe 68, but not 75. he could never have beaten Foster, Moore, Moorer, or Spinks at 75.
How does not being able to beat 4 fighters from different eras put him below world class? He most certainly could have and would have beaten Moore and Moorer at 175 as well. Moorer is getting quite overrated on these boards at 175. He was not exactly a very versatile fighter, and even with his perfect KO percentage, he looked less than spectacular in quite a few of those fights. Against a top opponent, he likely would've been exposed, especially an outboxer of Jones's skill. And Jones is THE worst style matchup for Archie Moore that I can think of.
