He beat a Cotto who had just been fairly competitive with Mayweather (more than anyone since DLH, and before that JLC) and was in good form. It isn't something to be dismissed.

    I KNEW this would happen.

Everyone says Canelo is afraid to fight Trout, they call him a ducker.

When he does actually sign on to fight, IMMEDIATELY people say Trout wasnt that good in the first place.

    Same move.Every time.

People only watched his last fight thats why, they don't know he really aint all of that, instant snoozer for me with his running ass:patsch

Trout wins 7 rounds against a shot Cotto that couldnt pull the trigger and now he's the best thing since sliced bread

Italic text-Who small WW FM manhandled in far more impressive fashion hurting Cotto numerous times

I find every tread bashing Trout or questioning his legitimacy to be quite ironic. We're talking about the guy who is fighting ginger right?? The same guy picked to lose against Cotto. Who team ginger wanted to fight correct??

I remember when Ortiz was supposed to use Lopez as a stepping stone. Lopez was picked in a heartbeat. "Cause he earned it they said". But to fight Austin Trout, ginger needed a

Good fight for Canelo to legitimize his reputation and gather another title.I,like many others, still believe that Trout is way over rated but this does not diminish his shot at the ginger haired assassin.
It's looking more and more like a quality card that GBP is putting together-if and when they announce it!

Which still arguably gives him 2 wins better than anything on Canelo's resume. Now that he's getting big fights, he'll have the opportunity to prove where he's at. I do think he has the best overall skill set of anyone at 154, other than perhaps Lara (who doesn't seem to have Trout's mental toughness).

if you still rate cotto highly, which i dont, then you might be impressed with trouts so called "skills". if you think floyd is the best at 154, which i dont, then you might be impressed with how trout beat someone who gave floyd such a tough fight. trout is is a solid world class fighter who i dont consider in the running for best fighter at 154. canelo, who i do consider in the running for best fighter at 154, will beat trout a lot more convincingly than trout or floyd beat cotto and will put the whole thing into perspective.

I too scored it 115-113, but the score looks closer than the fight actually was in the sense that Trout CLEARLY won 7 rounds while a couple of Cotto's rounds could have gone either way.

I don't think Cotto was significantly different than the version who fought Mayweather though. Styles make fights, and I think Cotto was made to look tentative through Trout's use of the jab, feinting and southpaw stance.

I've been a big Trout supporter since the Alvarez fight for the reasons already mentioned - no glaring weaknesses, slightly tricky style, very long for his weight class and he knows how to use it, incredible stamina, ability to stick to a game plan without getting deterred. His biggest weakness at this point seems to be that he gives too many rounds away and that he's often content to just nick a round rather than to win it dominantly. All that said, while he was underrated before Cotto, it may have swung a bit too far in the opposite direction now.

Have you seen him fight? He looks very good with no big weaknesses that stand out. A very solid boxer.
