just found this article about cro cop. its obviously not a new one so some of you have probably seen it. however there may be others who haven't and would like to read it. http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2012/7/27/3192110/judo-chop-the-curious-case-of-mirko-cro-cop-filipovic
Nice article. Also if you look at Cro Cop's upper body in the UFC, he looked notably softer. Did he stop taking roids?
That was a great piece...I'm gonna do something cool on Cro Cop as well, but from the business end...
Unfortunately his demise was not being able to take roids anymore ala Overeem along with facing better fighters in the UFC.
i had no idea that the difference between the ring and the octagon was so important to mirko and his style. getting in the octagon robbed him of part of his arsenal it seems. his last fight in kick boxing was last october, unfortunately. last time i watched him being interviewed it was quite distressing. it was right after a fight and he couldn't stop his face from twitching, it was awful seeing him like that. i'd never seen that with him before, and i imagine its to do with sustaining damage in the ring over the years. he has gone back to mma and his last fight was against Shinichi Suzukawa which he won via an armbar. that was only last december. he will fight Pedro Rizzo later this year.
I wouldn't say robbed. Mirko didn't even think about training in a cage until well into his UFC run. He let his arrogance get the best of him it seems.
Another thing that hurt Cro Cops game in the transition from Pride to UFC was the introduction of elbow strikes. When Mirko would get taken down in Pride he would simply close his guard and tie up the opponent and not allow him to strike until the ref stood them up. During his fight with Gonzaga, Cro Cop tried this tactic and got elbowed over and over again in his guard because they require much less space to throw to a clinching opponent than punches.
yes crocop peaked in PRIDE, by that time he had already been in alot of fights and taken alot of heavy shots. To me he simply had a fire in him that was a little more cut throat back in his peak. He has taken alot of bad shots. He took some bad shots in pride. Then in the UFC he has taken some heavy beatings. That is not easy to come back from when one is even slightly beyond their peak. Lions days do NOT LAST long. In his hay day he was as good as they got and could hang with anyone on the planet and pretty well did in one way or another. He was awesome. Some of his fights were so efficent. Clinical. When he got really good with that straight left [[ hes a southpaw right? lol, ive got brain lock ]] yeah when he got good with that left in pride plus his kicking he went in their hacking some good fighters to peices by going back and forth with kicking and punches. Impressive stuff. Sure Fedor was better than Crocop, but Fedor couldnt kick like Crocop could kick, lol, those kicks were so cool simply because everyone knew if Crocop just so happened to land a kick BANG on he could take ANYONE out on the spot game over. Plus the way he kicked Wand was freaking mind blowing, Wand looked like he was shot laying on the ground trying to gasp for life. That left a large impact on many myself included.
if i had a enemy and i wanted him kicked in the face as hard as possible i would have to go with Crocop ,,, i mean, lets be honest, there are prolly alot of footballers that could kick someones head off pretty well and i dont mean american football although you would think the kickers could give you quite a boot as well, but **** them, if your gonna have someone kicked in the head why go with anyone other than Crocop? I could watch Crocop kick people in the head all day.
Some interesting insight into Mirko in this Q & A with his former manager: http://www.liverkick.com/index.php?...an-who-brought-down-pride-part-1&catid=36:k-1
