This. Call it sacriligious, but I don't have a lot of sympathy for Louis on this. There was plenty of time before WWII to get himself in line to pay your taxes in a halfway intelligent manner. Louis couldn't be bothered; all he wanted to do was be left alone to box and to play golf. If he doesn't want to pay attention to his own financial issues, then he should have at least hired an accountant. He decided to ignore it instead. I hardly see how that is the fault of the government. As a citizen of the country making money plying a given trade, he knows damn good and well he's going to owe. If he doesn't get that, that's on him.

Of course, it's become cache' these days to portray Louis as the victim here, and people gobble that **** up.

Or a patriot. You aren't a coward because you chose to go down with the ship.

He loved his home, and he served it, while at the same time risking his life to oppose the Nazi atrocities in private.

Max Schmeling could be asked and expected to do no more.

One does not "let" a dictator with control of the army and a band of murderous secret police do anything. One does what one can, and one tries not to get shot.

    Yes, he was.

He was also an idiot with his money and he owed the IRS millions. Even heroes can be sued for breaking the law.

I am a fan of Louis', actually. May not read like that to see my comments, but I see him more as simply a man, warts and all. I'm sure he'd tell you the same.

I've seen it happen so many times with athletes. You have GOT to have your **** together. Even the President and candidates who run to oppose him have to pay taxes, and get audited.

I had a good manager in my 20's who made sure I had an accountant. Thank god. Floyd Mayweather made the same damn mistake, he's just making 10 million a fight.

Seriously; just a little reading on the subject would have been awesome here.

Eh, they're bulletproof at that age. Why think about tomorrow? You were smart to square yourself away, and lucky to have had a manager like that.

I think Schmeling was a good guy ,he helped Louis out in later years and always spoke warmly of him.He could have protested, and perhaps ended up on a meat hook, instead he did what he could.

I wasn't smart; It was all the help.

I seriously believe, at one point, this gem came out of my mouth: "I'll just invent a grill."

Yup. Just up and invent a grill. With my PhD in mechanical engineering and ****.
Thank god I'm good at getting punched in the face. We can't all have cookware named after us.
