I've been reading Jimmy McLarnin's book (great read too) and it was interesting to learn that San Francisco was apparently a hotbed of boxing in that era. What gyms in SF would have been the most noteworthy?

The Main Street Gym in LA. The California Boxing thread on this forum has some great pictures from that era; there is a similar thread on boxrec that includes great stories about California boxing.

Before the "Main Street Gym" there was the "original Main Street Gym" which burned down in 1951...In Los Angeles also we had The Teamsters Gym and The Resurrection Gym in the Eastside. All said gyms were famous and were used in lots of movies in their day.
