Basically, I don't think that McCallum fought at a clealry higher level but he has more prime losses. McCallum was the type of fighter that probably would have got shanked against one or more of the guys Nelson beat as a matter of course. That is my feeling.

But that's true of so many fighters, Drew. You could argue Mandell higher. I got two guys on my hands arguing McCallum higher. People in this thread have argued for dozens of fighters to be higher and I think there are about a dozen fighters ranked outside the seventies that could easily be in it. I also think there are a dozen fighters I could argue ahead of Fidel (including two flyweights). I don't think Fidel is ahead of the flys on the list at this time. I don't think he is a lock for the 100.

Does he have more 'prime' losses? Are we not counting Fenech I as a 'loss' for Azumah? Or was Nelson past it after losing to Pea and dropping back down?

Nice one this. Not something I've really contemplate before Nelson>McCallum :good

BTW; that's not me voting for The Little Professor just that I've never considered the fact he's on McCallum's tier.

Well Kalambay was better than Nelson imo.Would have beaten him comfortably.

That's Mike's only prime loss. The only time he really looked THAT bad until he was washed up, where Nelson struggled repeatedly against a multitude of styles. The fights he was in that were close, were fought on a lesser level than the ones McCallum were in that were relatively similarly competitive imo.

I think it's more likely if Nelson fights McCallum's opp he'd end up getting a gift or debatable decision over the likes of jackson, Graham, Collins etc

I'd go for the later I guess...certainly arguable though.

In the end, the prof only came undone to absolutely exceptional talent. McCallum could lose to really good fighters.

And Nelson met a shitload of really good fighters.

There's a sliver of daylight there.

Understood...But he's certainly in this discussion, and all I'm saying is that I would be more inclined to discuss his case than a number of fighters currently listed.

But I'm more than willing to wait while other matters are sorted out.:good

I had him on the "last list" a few hours ago but that list has went huge. I bet he makes it on but he's not a lock at this point.

Poor effort. The kind McCallum doesn't have in his prime.

Martinez and Villasana were good fighters, the best Nelson beat in his prime that were also prime, but i'd take the likes of Watson and Collins over them, to use two fighters of relatively similar approach.

Villasana's skills were dire, he was freakishly tough, solid hitter and awkward, but a guy like Collins was also really tough(not quite as durable imo)and had a far more varied-if also ugly- skillset, different approaches he could employ in an awkardly effective manner.Marcos just shuffled forward like an invulnerable cigar store indian.

Right let's leave the Nelson argument for the moment. I'm confident enough in it that i probably won't budge. But that's not to say that McCallum shouldn't be moved up a tier.

Pete Herman, Sammy Mandell, JMM, Solly Krieger, Benny Lynch, Larry Holmes.

These are the guys he needs to be ranked above to gain a bump. What you two think?

Villasana hit harder than Collins though. And I think his chin is one of the best I've ever seen.

    Still, nice comparisons.
