how do you get the point across that you don't want to hang out with a friend/s?

i currently have a friend who i don't really want to hang out with any more. i haven't seen him for a few months but this is because i've been avoiding him. i don't know how to get it across that i am not interested in socialising with him any more.

this may sound harsh but i just don't have anything in common with him any more. we have known each other since we were about 8/9 years old, but over the last 3-4 years our common interests aren't the same and we are at different stages in life now.

he has a wife, a baby, and has his own place. we are both 24 and i have gone back to education, whereas he is working full time to provide. the thing is he is the kind of person to persistently keep on calling and seeing what's happened to me.

i could not even hang out with him any more as i have nothing to talk with him about. the conversation was forced in the past, so it's kind of pointless to either bother socialising. i can't just say "i don't want to see you any more, mate" because it's too direct and harsh. but at the same time, it's making things awkward because i have to keep avoiding him or his family in case they tell me that he wants to see me.

    what do i do?

what would you do in my situation?

    :huh

just stop answering his phone calls and tell him you're too busy whenever he asks you to hang out. He'll understand eventually. I got rid of one of my best friends that way, but i did it because he wanted to **** my girlfriend, this dude has done nothing to deserve the cold shoulder, aside from genuinely appreciating you from the looks of it. but it seems you're not a true friend and never were

If I were you, I wouldn't be so hasty in ****ing off a friend, especially one who I've known for a long time.
Maybe you have nothing or little in common, but at the same time, surely to have been friends for so long, you must have had something you enjoyed about your friendship?

It's your choice of course, but I've known a guy who let an old friendship die, and he's sorry for it now. Just don't be hasty, is all I'm saying.

no. he has always been quite selfish, but only recently he's been boring. like i said our lives are totally different now and i have grown apart from him. it's nothing to do with not being a true friend. people grow apart, it's a part of life.

i am sure you don't have friends now that you've always had. what is the point of me socialising with him if we do nothing but the same stuff and talk about nothing different? like i said he has a family now, i don't.

he has only ever been in contact when HE felt like doing so. that is the selfish part of him. although we have known each other for a long time, he's never been a friend i would 100% trust. it's just the way it is i guess. i have another friend who i've known for about 6 years and i believe i can 100% trust him. i don't know why but it's just the way i feel.

After an honest talk, you won't want to get rid of him anymore. Simply stating that you feel you are at different stages in life will kick start a good conversation.

Maybe you are his last link to carefree days. Or maybe you feel a little behind the curve compared to him. Probably it is a little of both.

But after getting things out in the open, you too will be fine. He should understand your need for space and you should appreciate having a long time friend.

i don't think you grow apart... directions change... thinkings change. That being said he sounds like a good friend. I mean who rings these days? Everyone is busy in their own lives that they don't have time for childhood friends. Most contact you when they are in need etc. If you really want to end the friendship just say it like a man.

Also tell him to watch the Ishe-K9 post fight interview with Jim Grey.
