I see that in this forum sometimes...some one says "well of course so and so would have the advantage of modern training" or "so and so (Jim Jeffries, Jack Dempsey etc.) would be so much better with mondern training"

what do people picture or mean when they say that? near as i can figure..maybe a bit less intense cardio, maybe less distance running (although many old school guys did practice interval running, see Jack Dempsey Championship fighting training section)?

do they mean weight lifting? if they/you do, do you/they realize that many of these "modern trained" fighters didnt lift. Ali didn't lift, Holmes didnt lift, hell Tyson didn't lift until he got out prison.

So, what exactly do you mean when you say "modern training"

(I could put this in the training section, but I am more curious to actually hear what the classic guys mean).

Most of what boxers do today is the same **** that guys did 20, 40, 50, 75, 90 years ago.

Now you might say that you mean the modern strength and conditioning work outs that guys like Pac and now Marquez do. May be some relevence to that...but most of those guys are amazing before they ever do those workouts...also..many of those work outs arent that much different than the medicine ball, calastic and pully type workouts done 80 years ago.

Not sticking solely to Running 10 miles a day, doing hundreds of sit-ups and press ups, not touching weights for fear of being big and slow etc.

They are trying to rationalize that fighters from the past would have even the scantest chance to compete with the athletes of today.

    Sad, I know.

The fighters of today know about vitamins and such. Therefore, they know how to feint and fight in the pocket effectively and stuff.

    Vitamins.

I think it's pretty damn obvious. The benefit of having evolved knowledge of what boxing technique works etc....that is incorporated into training.

Vitamins, advanced understandings of nutrition and lifestyle via scientific research.

Vitamins AND brightly-colored sparring gloves. Let's not discount the gloves. They're unapologetically hip and "now." Pastels and everything, perfect for the discerning, image-conscious young pugilist of today!

might be some rational to that point..but the truth is the whole running 10 miles every day was only in vogue from the 50s into the early 80s...guys like Dempsey did not do that, they actually did a type of interval running.

sit ups and press ups are pretty ****ing good....

Mike Tyson in his prime never really used weights (I know we got that story that when he was 13 he got on a bench press for the first time and bench pressed some crazy amount...who knows if it is true, but either way he didn't use lifting as a part of his regular training until after prison).

does look pretty bad....i think for whatever reason guys did that kind of stuff for the camera...

i've seen other footage like that..of course doing sparring or shadow boxing for the camera..and looking wild...than you see actual fights and they look different.

unfortunately i cant really find any real fight footage of Greb...I can find him hitting the speed bag..he looks pretty good at that

    [yt]QHnidDtgFaw[/yt]

We also have some actual footage of some guys that he beat...guys like gene tunney

    [yt]ETDzw3cv_YA[/yt]

but if you chose to believe that clip of play sparring for the camera's is a accurate indications of Grebs true ability....well...go on...

Apparently you have not been paying attention to those who insist Marciano would be 6 foot 3 and 220 if he were around today.

And if I'm trolling, what does that make you in responding?

i think generational food differences can make a difference in average height.....rocky may have been well feed growing up, but his parents may not have..that could make 1/2 a inch difference in height....but who gives a ****?

it is also true that modern fighters have a bit of extra weight..i think their is a bit less endurance exercise, however, at heavyweight most of these big 240 pounders are fat ****s like solis...even the muscle is of suspect value...does anyone think that briggs adding those 20 odd pounds of muscle helped him when he sultan ibramov was speeding around him?

You post a picture of Hart....while over looking guys like Jeffries and Johnson who looked a damn sight better than all but the klitschkos of today......

here is a picture of modern heavyweight who doesnt look much better than hart (a bit bigger i guess)
