Mike Tyson (1988) Vs Jack Dempsey (1919-21) 15 Rd Heavyweight Fight

I picked Tyson, but did so reluctantly because of all the modern is better nut huggery going on in this thread.

I like both guys, but dislike Tyson fan and Dempsey detractors to an equal degree. I think, and perhaps I am wrong that Tyson is the more durable of the two and that would be the most significant factor in this fight. I see a 2-2 fight going into the 5th when Tyson stops Dempsey. Tyson TKO 5

his uppercut did suck on the inside..the didnt throw a thight uppercut...he generally had to step off to have the room to throw it.

 

this is about the closes to a inside uppercut as tyson usually got (he threw some in tight with tills..but wasnt really effective with them)

Jose, is putting his head down and ear muffing it..not hard to land a uppercut on that....

generally speaking what "saved" tyson was his speed..and also the fact that he usually knew when to throw his uppercut (also many guys had been put back on their heels, or were ear muffing it..hence making the chances they could counter less).

having said that...a element of danger of being countered was involved with tysons uppercut, namely a sharp left hook.

 

As he was only stopped once in 77 fights,[and that in debatable circumstances],I think we can assume he did.

There was also another Tunney - Dempsey one that had him with 8" wrists...Genius.

 

You're making yourself look foolish here. Tyson is the one of greatest in fighters of all time at any weight. If he steps over to get leverage, angles and power it's still infighting. He has all the tools, the short overhand right, hooks to the body and head and uppercuts and he uses them with brutal effect INSIDE

Tyson did take rests inside but he was also a great inside puncher

 

I'm not sure on this all? This could go either and very quickly and could go either way as emphatically whether it went Tyson's way or whether it went Dempsey's way? If you're asking me what I'm sure on then no much, but here goes: Tyson definately doesn't like it when Dempsey is continuing to punch inside and clip him round the ears and squeeze in uppercuts when tangled in clinches and Dempsey was very good in clinches tying up arms and then getting one of his own free to ram away - Tyson sometimes went to sleep in clinches - Bruno managed to get away with a lot of hitting and holding and Dempsey did that to everyone in the clinches - it may be a very messy fight I think much of which may be spent tangled in clinches just because of the propensity for both men to go forward non stop this is going to lead inevitably to a lot Of clinches and tangles in close which is certainly one place that Dempsey clearly excelled for me and I think he would try everything he could To stop Tyson from be able to create that like bit of distance to start getting his effective hooks and uppercuts going - I see Dempsey being the more frantic in there he's go right at Mike from the sound of the bell a la Peter mcNeeley hahaha maybe slightly more controlled but I honestly do think Dempsey does a mcNeely and can see Tyson going into his shell and trying to weather and rip the odd uppercut or hook with more control but Tyson is definately going to take something very bad very quickly - he may even be a little but surprised at Dempsey's strength - he was able to tug a bull like Firpo around like a wrag doll a lot of the time and basically bully and man handle him - Tyson definately has never fought anyone with anywhere like the aggression of Dempsey so it would be interesting to see how he reacts to it (usually being the one overwhelming people with aggression)? I see Dempsey's wrecklessness getting him nailed and going wobbly and down from one of Tyson's more controlled shots but Dempsey could fight like a man possessed when hurt - they would probably be competing to see who could out-dirty the other aswell haha but I think Tyson would be the more likely to start sulking and mentally folding first - only based on him doing that a few times in his career it's easier to envisage i suppose - its difficult to envisage what exactly it would take to stop Dempsey because I haven't seen it happen with my own eyes (the Flynn thing aside which I think was a sham) Dempsey would probably keep getting knocked over and wading straight back in and even though Tyson has a coupla stone on Dempsey, Dempsey was still always able to smash everyone he fought (and some guys who were much bigger than Tyson) to smithereens - seems strange to say it but if Tyson is caught cold then could even get stopped in first 3 - remember watching first Bruno fight and thinking if Tyson was staggered like he was by Bruno in that first round - but against a real killer someone and deadly finisher he was there for the taking right then but Bruno was just not a natural fighter and couldn't do it - replace him with Dempsey and...well if Dempsey gets Tyson stunned like that well that's it IMO
