It's all about exposure. Doing an undercard vs. Mayweather gives him back to back large audiences; establishes him as a big fight fighter.

Once he does this, he can headline HBO/Sho cards. He's not established enough yet.

 

So if he's not fighting Floyd, then he should fight trout with no worries of missing a payday

Trout did beat a tough opponent in Cotto, but as fast as he got props is as fast as how we now hear that Cotto is old and not a real 154 fighter. I know Trout has some skills, but look, he's got 1 win over a named fighter and Canelo has the honor of giving Mosely his 3rd loss in a row.

He's already been put out as Mexico's greatest champion so of course he believes the press clippings. Oscar and Shaefer, probably Oscar, babied this guy and probably let him do what he wanted for so long so now you got this.

 

Kind of a bad move by Canelo. He hasn't beaten anybody significant yet. If he stays on the May 4th undercard AND beats Trout, it makes sense for Canelo to headline a card for his following fight. Otherwise it's in his best interest to be in mega events until he's proven to beat a world class opponent at 154. I don't know the financial details but wouldn't Saul make more money fighting on May 4th (alongside Floyd) as opposed to any other date?

Floyd will probably lose anywhere from 300K-500K PPV buys without Canelo. But Mayweather will still hit the 1M mark which is still impressive. He doesn't really need Canelo because Floyd's biggest PPV competitor has waned by losing his last 2 fights.

 

Canelo is yet to have beaten anyone of note. If he beats Trout that raises his profile and makes the demand for PBF-Canelo much greater.
