So Canelo wants to give us 2 good fights back to back but he is the bad guy?

Not a bad guy per se. Just kind of an ill-advised business move. If Canelo loses to Trout, why should Canelo still be guaranteed to a mega payday against Floyd? Mayweather doesn't fight guys coming off a loss. If Canelo fights on a date besides May 4th, he wouldn't make as much money especially if he's not fighting Trout. Am I correct on this?

 

I think a lot of people have taken Trout from "solid test" to "decided favorite" more based on dislike of Canelo than anything concrete.

The issue is it hurts Floyd's initial PPV.
An undercard without Alvarez vs Trout on the Mexican ID would take a major hit in PPV sales.
Most of that money would end up in Floyd's pockets, so he then would miss out on that. That's the issue that hurts "money". And if he really cares more about money as keeping his precious O, or really doesn't see him as a threat he should sign the fight with Canelo.

 

That's correct.

Alvarez isn't saying "Guarantee me a fight in September, and I'll fight Trout on your card".

He's saying "Guarantee me a fight in September, and I'll fight another soft opponent on your card."

That's not two good fights back to back. That's being a spoiled child that expects to be given a big payday without earning it.

 

Floyd likes his opponents to have some credibility before he faces them. This ultimatum won't turn out well for Alvarez imo

 

GBP has coddled Canelo to the point where he thinks he's as big and important as they are telling him that he is.

Mayweather should just tell him to **** off. Who does he think he is?

 

Personally, I don't get the gamble. I'm a sales/marketing guy and can't find a single way this helps Canelo.

Fight with a big fight on the line: good.
Get a big payday win or lose: no drama, bad

Step up in class: good
Fight another no hoper: re-enforces negative branding.

Fight on PPV: huge exposure relative to earnings
Fight on HBO: smaller audience for similar earnings, miss out on viewers/potential fans.

Can anybody see how this is supposed to work?

1.036 million viewers tuned in to see Canelo for free in his last fight. Mayweather's last four fights have had more viewers at $60 a pop. Canelo's presence on the undercards obviously doesn't mean much if only a million people are tuning in for free to watch him.

Anyways, this is all bull**** and Canelo's advisors will surely tell him to take a soft touch on 5/4 as that is the best option for him if he does want Floyd later in the year.

 

I don't think that's the case. Floyd doesn't give a toss about Canelo's level of credibility. GBP have already built him up to be regarded as the number one junior middleweight of the world with massive earning potential amongst Mexican fans. He's got the hype. And that's the only thing Floyd wants. Hype.

Instead, what's probably putting Floyd off are the following two things:

• Canelo's too expensive to put on his card. He'll likely demand a huge slice -- which he doesn't deserve -- out of the overall pie. Because contrary to the popular belief on ESB, Canelo actually isn't needed to sell this event. Mayweather alone can sell a million plus. Guaranteed.
• Floyd might not even be fighting in September. No point obliging yourself to a contractual agreement to fight on a date you're not even 100% sure you'll be going ahead with.

 

He's not a bad guy, but it's simply a bad business move, a move he does not have the firepower behind him to do so.

You will not force a guy who has routinely fought once a year to sign a contract to box months after his most recent bout. You will not force Mayweather to do anything at this point, he is the guy, he has been the PPV attraction for all these years, he is light years ahead of you. Picking up a belt and having a good backing behind you does not equate to power in boxing. It helps, but he doesn't have the resume to start dictating anything in this type of bout.

The way he is going about it is kind of childish, guarantee me a bout I haven't really earned (apart from being a ginger Mexican) and I will box on a show that will come close to 1 million buys (or more) with or without me on it. Plus I may box someone who will for once be considered a threat on said show.

 

Canelo is acting like a ***** and no way Floyd gives in especially with his Showtime guarantees.
