Can you think of boxers built like Mike Tyson...

...who fought like toe dancers?

 

This reminds me of a question from another site...."If Tyson was fleet footed, did he have the skillset to get up and dance around the ring, like Ali?"

The first guy that comes to mind is Bruce Seldon

 

orlin norris was about as close to him in size as anyone. but had no power at heavyweight... if that was the point of this thread

 

Maybe this will clarify, i. Orlin Norris was compact like Tyson , but he certainly didn't have Mike's power, but he didn't dance around the ring in panic behind stay-away jabs the way Seldon did.

 

Ike Quartey was a short, squat, thickly built welterweight, but he wasn't about bob and weaving his way to a target before destroying them with hooks and uppercuts. Mostly jabs and boxing from him.

It'd be an overstatement to say he was as built up and bulky as Tyson, but his fighting style still seemed incongruous with his frame.

 

Cant think of any boxers that come to mind with that style and build. It wouldn't really make sense imo, you'd be negating some of your physical assets boxing on the outside, and being a mover. A person with tysons build, and even a fraction of his speed and power would be better suited as a pressure fighters

 

I'm on phone so can't check, but did the early version if Berto have a similar build on a smaller scale?

You're dead right, s, but Google how mountain of muscle bully Gene Fullmer did a Willie Pep on Carmen Basillio in their first fight. Couldn't believe my eyes.

 

Well now that I think about it, I can sort of see what your talking about

I suppose a fair example of this thread would be Nigel Benn's fight with Henry Wharton. Although he wasn't exactly built like Mike Tyson, and Wharton was no Carmen Basilio, Benn reverted from being a fearsome swarming pressure fighter to boxing largely on the outside, displaying good countering ability and discipline in the process, while Wharton acted out the role of the pressure fighter on the night. It was such a contrast to Benn's early middleweight days, where he was aggressive to the point of reckless, that its always stuck with me.
